Upgrade for users of 1/2" mylar belt
Dave4u and Andirocks, Just noticed your posts. Glad this tweak works well for you, as it does for most everyone who's tried it. Enjoy!... and a belated thanks to Richard (Palasr) for posting that new source for holographic mylar tape.
Raos cartridge
Echoes from the distant past? Voices which were none too credible then are revived after four years of silence... by yet another member who's never posted, bought or sold on Audiogon before. To Raoslei's credit, he's now openly shilling his own pr...
Philosophy: Bearing vs. Unipivot
Benjysch, thanks for clarifying. Parts of my post addressed azimuth instability, so hopefully not a total waste. Some unipivots address this successfully, others not so much.I'm no van der Rohe (thanks for the comparison) but I am a stickler for d...
7.1 or 5.1
*** the Analog Forum answer***As mentioned by others, this is an analog forum. Analog recordings (with rare exceptions) are limited to 1 or 2 channels. The question of whether it's better to play them back on a 5.1 or 7.1 system is a red herring, ...
Philosophy: Bearing vs. Unipivot
...there just HAS to be more relative movement with a unipivot arm than one with bearings.A broadly construed assumption that lacks clarity of formulation and overreaches in its conclusion. First, did you ask yourself what constitutes a "bearing"?...

Cleaning Phono Stylus- white residue
+1 to Whart's comments. Good post.
Cleaning Phono Stylus- white residue
I've rehabilitated at least a dozen supposedly "worn out" cartridges with a proper stylus cleaning using Magic Eraser. All they needed was something abrasive enough to remove built up residue, followed by a dry brushing to remove loosened particle...
Don't you just hate it when---
BREAK-INArthur's U2 needed many hours before settling in. Ours knocked our sonic socks off on the first play and changed very little after 10-15 hours. In other words, YMMV. The molecular bonding characteristics of elastomers used in cartridge sus...
Recommendation on MC cartidge and Phono Preamp
Ralph, I gave him the same advice on his other thread. To the OP, Atmasphere designs and builds phono stages (and other amplifiers) for a living. He's also a recording and LP production engineer. He knows whereof he speaks.
Phono Preamp and Cartridge selection
Ralph,Even if that's true (I lack the electrical expertise to discuss the point), my personal LOMC listening indicates that loading at 47K is optimal only with a minority of phono stages... typically, higher end units at higher end prices. In most ...
Magic Eraser used for vinyl cleaning?
Then tumble dry? ;-)
Magic Eraser used for vinyl cleaning?
Agree with Sunnyboy1956.I'm the original author of the Magic Eraser as stylus cleaner concept. Using ME to clean vinyl is NOT recommended. The primary reason is not the residue (which exists but could be removed). The primary reason is that melami...
Phono Preamp and Cartridge selection
The Quintet Black is a low output MC (rated at 0.3mv) with an MSRP of $1K.So, given a cartridge + phono stage budget of $3K, would it make sense to spend $1K on a LOMC and $2K on a phono stage? Or would some other distribution of funds provide mor...
Harry Weisfeld Was Right All Along
Is it feasible that the unipivot arm bearing wearing in defeated the need for the A/S?I certainly hope not. Tonearm bearings should not wear in any detectible way for many years, if not decades. If it wore that much in just 100 hours, it would soo...
