R2R next? Don't like ESS DACs seem to be a balance of detail vs. musicality which are both attributes which can be good or bad. I personally haven't been able to tolerate the ESS chip based DACs I've heard so far as the detail gets edgy and digital. High sounds actually h...
The best opening act you've ever seen & heard? Deerhoof for From Montreal and REM for Gang of Four.
Pass INT-25, split decision and maybe option? Let me throw in the Don Sachs Valhalla tube integrated as a possibility. I had the Linear Tube Audio z40+ integrated which is more expensive than the Valhalla and I thought the Valhalla was significantly better. It has about 33 watts per channel (...
T+A DAC200 vs. PS Audio Directstream Mk2 I have a Directstream Mk1 with the transformers upgraded to the Mk2. I tried the DAC 200 and it was too bright for me but a lot of people like it. My understanding is that the DAC 200 excels with DSD but is just ok with PCM. I only used it with PC...
What compilation album from The Kinks do I want? The Kink Kronikles is a great compilation that has Lola and Apeman (of your 4). It also has stuff you may have never heard along with great notes by longtime Kronicler John Mendelssohn. In a review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine at AllMusic, he said...
Should I buy a seperate dac? I would test if out with Dacs that you have a trial period with and decide if it is worth it.
DDC Cableing The I2S cable is important. I read a number of posters swear by Tubulus I2S cables. I just got one off of USAudioMart (Concentus) and just put it in and it is immediately apparent (this was used so broken in) how good this cable is. I'd say its co...
LAIV Harmony I found the Iris made a significant improvement as well. The problem was I changed DACs and the Iris cannot adjust its I2S settings. The Hermes can and has a better clock. If you go Denafrips and you are looking to use the I2S input to your DAC, I...

Recordings with BASS I also agree with Bela Flec- Flight of the Cosmic Hippo and add Justice vs. Simian"s "We Are Your Friends"
«Today’s Lyrics Are Pathetically Bad» Rick Beato @mitchagain I agree with a lot of your examples and would add more like Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell just in the 70s (poet/singers) and say the Raincoats for the late 70s and early 80s and Gang of Four in the 70s. I could go on and on....
Is anyone here still into live concerts these days? I’ve gone to a few. I’m finding that even smaller bands are cranking their volume up to painful degrees. I saw Spoon and Alvvays and Spoon was almost unlistenable live whereas Alvvays was just on the edge of being so loud that you really couldn’t ...
Maggie LRS vs .7 I had both. Started with the LRS and then moved to the .7s. I thought they were similar but .7s go a bit lower. I had a bigger space they were in so the .7s were more appropriate. Ultimately, I went open baffle to get the transparency of the Magg...
Chinese Cables that sound good I mostly buy boutique stuff from American although I do get stuff from Amazon. I don’t think it is possible to divorce yourself from bad labor practices which exist in every country unless you are completely off the grid and only living off the la...
What's the best 6NS7 tube you have tried in your Atma-Sphere MP-3 preamp? @vthokie83 I would definitely like to hear how the Ray Select tubes are as they are about 1/2 or so of the Reserve. I might replace power tubes with Select tubes if they are still better than most of what is out there. |
