VTA and SRA?
They are the same thing. VTA = vertical tracking angle; SRA = stylus rake angle. Both are measures of the angle of the stylus to the groove along the axis of the cantilever. The measure of the angle of the stylus to the groove perpendicular to the...

Best Rock Album in 2013
Just listened to Nine Inch Nails "Hesitation Marks" on vinyl. I thought it was quite impressive. Fidelity was superior, didn't hear much compression and the tunes were all entertaining.
Maxell or TDK?
The real trick was biasing the deck for a specific tape type. Different tapes required somewhat different biases. These had to be set using an oscilloscope for almost all decks. I liked TDK SA better than Maxell UDXL II; it sounded more lively. Bu...
McIntosh .... bang for the buck ... I need help
Per A-goN rules, had to send you a PM to answer your questions. Went out this morning.
What would cause...
All previous posters a/o Mapman 10/1/13 are correct. The arm has a ground fault in the left channel. Could be in the arm itself, could be the RCA cable, could be the headshell, could be the cartridge leads, could be all of those. Not worth fooling...
VPI Classic 3 or McIntosh MT5?
Both tables are solid units, with VPI having a better street rep. MT5 is new and Mc is not known for tables, but McIntosh doesn't fool around. The trick is really with the cartridge - it needs to compliment your speakers and Sumikos tend to color ...
McIntosh .... bang for the buck ... I need help
I haven't personally listened to the MHT100 (that's the correct model number, and one in very nice shape is listed on A-goN out of Edina MN @ $2500 from a dealer - you can look it up). However, it is not what most folks would consider a "tradition...
Mcintosh MVP-871
I auditioned an 861 a few years ago and finally purchased an 881BR because I wanted the BD capability. They are both superb audio players; musical, transparent and able to read everything that's on the disc. 5.1 surround is also outstanding (haven...
Stylus Rake Angle
I can't speak to the Benz cartridge specifically, but the general rule of thumb for adjusting VTA is start with the arm in the horizontal position and go from there. It's worked for every cartridge I've ever used. It is possible that Benz may have...
tonearm parameters
That's a really open-ended question, Boofer! The answers (there are quite a few) really depend on vinyl condition, the table you're mounting the arm on, what kind of cartridge you prefer and how much adjustability you want. Oh, and your budget, to...
Dynavector 17D3 with a Denon AU300LC SUT
The 17D3 is a super-musical, but unforgiving cart that will reveal the smallest flaw when properly set up. Don't know if you would like it with Denon electronics; it's not a combination that strikes me as ideal. Still, it all ultimately depends on...
Rush Live in 2013 - Clockwork Angels
Saw them in Cleveland for the Time Machine tour when they made the DVD/BD movie. Great show! Saw Roger Waters do The Wall in Pittsburgh last year, too. Hands down, that was the best big venue show I've seen since the early 90's. The sound was simp...
McIntosh D100 variable vs fixed outs soundstage
I agree that the MA6300 isn't needed any longer. The C2500 is a tube preamp with MM/MC phono inputs and a DAC section - that is the enhancement over the C2300. C2300 sounds wonderful (to my ears anyway) and was very well reviewed.C48 and C50 both h...
Change the cartridge or phono stage
Elevick is correct; you want no coloration out of the table/arm/cartridge at all. Start with a good protractor, scale and a powerful magnifying glass. Adjust the VTA so the scale is at record surface height when you've dialed in the tracking weigh...
