Good carts with SME V
I disagree with you Chakster. And that is despite you and I being the two principle Reed 3P fan-boys on this board. Btw, if you don't mind my asking, where are you (Asia?). Just curious. This might be the topic of a separate thread, but between th...
What is the fascination?
Personally, and only personally, I prefer mating a vintage deck-restored or revitalized by a pro, with a modern era arm, in my case Reed 3P's. My "trusted guy" for deck restoration mostly gravitates toward SME 3009's. When he got a chance to see, ...
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
Having owned Adagios, they are a great speaker, but based upon a long history listening to them, I think that transmission lines mated to mid-woofers tend to have rather bloated, "blubbery" bass at the break-up frequency, right around 45 hz or so....
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
As good as the various designs were there was only one loudspeaker there that left me unable to find any fault sonically, and that was the Kerr Acoustic K320 (https://www.kerracoustic.com/k320) Interesting; other than having a single mid-woofer...
What is the fascination?
Again, I invite those of you who are in the "new makes most sense" camp to candidly chime in as to whether you HAVE or have NOT actually had the opportunity to sit down and listen to a vintage deck along the lines of a TD124 or Garrard 301. Let me...
I need your help. I have an ARC Ref 3, ARC 110, Vandersteen 5As, but no turntable.
Just so you know, for what little it is worth, I have decided that compared to my Thorens TD124 fully modded and revived by Greg of ClassicThorens/STS mated with a 12" Reed 3P arm, my VPI Prime just does not cut it. That is despite having a pro co...

Ignorance is bliss. For (some of ) those of you who replied to the OP, expressing opinions based entirely upon blind belief and your sense of the world is a waste of your time and ours. The OP asked a loaded question with "fascination". Art Dudley...
Best vinyl purchases based on pressing, studio production, sound quality and enjoyment.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings' "The Harrow and the Harvest" and "Soul Journey". These represent one of the few instances in which the artists themselves saw to it that analogue was used at every step and that the mastering and pressing were don...
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
@fsonicsmith Have you heard the Audio Note AN-E's, which just happen to be Devore's principal inspiration? To my ears the originals are still the best in that category that matters to you, truth of timbre. No, but I would like to. Next year I hope...

Raul, my friend, you seem to forget that their is distortion introduced by every microphone known to mankind, but every piece of the recording chain, by every piece of the playback chain, by every amplifier in particular) known to mankind, by ever...

If you have no Lp's now, why go into analog, the learning curve is very slow.IMO just stick with digital. The vinyl-deny-ers just don't get it. It's not about convenience or practicality. It's about getting involved. You have to hunt for good recor...
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
This is interesting stuff. I will grant that absent near field listening, timbre and reverberant energy are to a degree intertwined. The topic needs to be assessed with the idea of "average listening rooms". Most but not all speaker designers desi...

1 bpolletti! Just because the venerable 103 was designed back in 1962 doesn't make it a mediocre piece of cr*p! And the venerated Ortofon SPU's are even older! No, the stock 103 sounds fine and will do the job (play records). Upgrades are availa...

Jaym759, you're more than welcome. The Jelco arms look dated but they outperform anything in their price range. It boils down to bearing quality, tolerance, construction and ease of adjusting VTA, SRA, VTF, azimuth, and zenith. Don't get me wrong,...
