Ethernet cables
Ethernet is, in fact, zeros and ones.  What's important are that the end connections are tight.  I don't know that the cable itself is super important as long as it's capable of not breaking down through twists and turns.  When we talk about digit...
Ripping CDs
I use AShampoo Burning Studio.  It's the least fussy burning software I've found.  Very inexpensive.  You can RIP or BURN music, to and from ISO files or whatever you need.  It also looks up the song data on Gracenote and names your RIPped files a...
What to do with a large collection
RIP them all to a music server and give the the CD's away.  Have a yard sale.  Take them to Goodwill. Sell the greats on ebay or reverb.  Little by little they will be gone.
Speakers - Your "Safest" Choice
There's nothing wrong with Wilson speakers.  I've had a pair of Sophias for a long time, 10 years, and am totally happy with them. But that choice was after a long search and lots of listening.  I agree with auditioning them yourself. The more the...
Any Experience with Cary's AIOS ALL-IN-ONE MUSIC SYSTEM
Thanks.
Why isn't better quality used gear being made available?
Because great equipment is more rare and less likely to be sold by those who appreciate it.  Patience is the best option.
When to choice XLR over RCA ICs.
XLR cables and interfaces are used in audio applications because they are designed to cancel out radio interference.  One side has reverse polarity to the other.  When interference crosses the cables their signal moves the same direction across bo...
Help me spend $100,000 on a new system
You could buy some killer Wilson Alexx speakers and supplement the setup with a  high end amp and preamp.  The guys here will have plenty of suggestions.  Alternatively, maybe write the editors at Stereophile for some recommendations.  I like the ...
What are your top 3 favorite female singers?
Joni Mitchell - "Blue" Diana Krall - anything Susana Baca - "Eco de Sombras" Rosemary Clooney - "Do You Miss New York" Ok, that's four.  But then I like Sade a lot too...
Neil Young calls out Tidal
Kudos to Mr. Young. It’s not about the quality of the file or the format. It’s about misrepresentation. When someone says it’s the Master, it should mean The Master, not some version of the Master. That "semantic" plays into getting more people to...
BlueSound Stinks(!), anyone?
I have a Vault 2.  Never had a problem with it.  My only gripe is that it only connects over wired network.  I had to get a wifi extender setup that offers an RJ45 ethernet port over at my stereo area. Other than that it's been great. Phone app wo...
"Bridge Over Trouble Water" sounds artificial
IMO - it's always sounded over produced to me. I think it sounds best on car radios or smaller, lesser systems.  The LP might be a different story, IDK.
Should people who can't solder, build or test their speakers be considered audiophiles?
An audiophile is someone who appreciates and savors, and (probably) lusts after the best audio they can afford. They read audio magazines and listen to well recorded music. They talk about sound stage, the quality of the mids, clarity of the trebl...
What is the average dealer mark up?
In the end, I think that what matters is that it's a free world, at least in America, and you can't tell business owners what they are suppose to charge or how much profit they're supposed to make. Nor should you want to. Too much price cont...
Michael Fremer's system
Seems like a typical gearhead, audiophile, mad-scientist laboratory.  When you are as busy as he is there isn't time to be neat and pretty.  He's eccentric, extremely knowledgeable and pretty humorous as well.  Good for him!  And - I'll take the A...
