Adding a sub
What ever you choose I would make sure it is able to be connected through the 'high level input'. It makes a big difference. Look at REL videos for explanation. Paul McGowen recommends this as well.
McCormack ALD-1 repair
Did you contact Steve McCormack directly?  https://smcaudio.net/ IMHO... for the extreme cost of repair you can buy a new unit for less that has modern advancements that will outperform it. For example, modern volume controls are far superior.
Here's to the temperate, the gentle, the moderates in audio
Great post. I'd also add 'Cheapaudioman' and 'iiWi' to the list. Highlighting less expensive products that sound incredibly good.
how many ways to hook up a subwoofer
You can run a wire from the back of the Amp to the 'High level input' OR (my preferred method) go from the speaker with a short wire to the High level input. Don't worry, the high level input just needs a tiny bit of signal and puts NO strain on ...
how many ways to hook up a subwoofer
@ellajeanelle    +1. A requirement is having a subwoofer that has a 'high level input'. Connects from the output of the amp. This way it will respond to the character of the amp. If the amp is punchy you'll get that punch. If you run it from the ...
Piano black polish and refinish
@lonemountain  +1.  Gloss black is the most difficult to maintain. The actual 'color' of the black used is critical. Yes, some blacks are 'blacker' than others. They're not all the same. The size of the scratches will dictate how aggressive the ...
Eliminated my preamp with amazing results
@gfguillot  Controlling the volume is a huge challenge and only the best preamps can do it without losing anything in the signal.  With all due respect... that's not true. Audirvana has an excellent volume control. (Roon also). No preamp neede...
shy about prices
Always sell the product first. Point out all the great features and get them interested/excited. This will help justify and prepare you for the big price tag they're about to hit you with.
I took Frank Zappa’s advice
When I saw the title, I thought you might be "moving to Montana soon".
Eliminated my preamp with amazing results
@skinzy  Thanks for sharing this info. This says it all...  By definition, a conventional preamp takes in the audio-industry standard signal and boosts it up to full volume for the sole purpose of turning it down again! MSB’s ladder DACs put o...
Thinking of upgrading speakers from ProAc 3.8 I have enjoyed in my system for 23 years.
The Sonas Faber are absolutely gorgeous and get my vote. They have a "wow" factor far beyond the 'square box' Proac. Sound wise both speakers have tweeter/midrange/ midbass drivers and I'm sure both sound very good. However, the Sonas Faber are wo...
Upgraded my cables and they transformed my system!!!
Are you using lifters?
Eliminated my preamp with amazing results
@retiredfarmer  Thank you for such a thoughtful reply! So sorry to hear of your accident. I truly wish you the best. I think we're on the same page. Without experimentation how does one know if there system is as good as it can be or how far you...
Eliminated my preamp with amazing results
@lanx0003  The closest reference I could find to Paul's narrative on this subject is a post he made six years ago. Essentially, his comments align with what has been underscored below, in contrast to what you have cited. Could you please provide...
Eliminated my preamp with amazing results
@atmasphere  Make no mistake- for a DAC to drive a power amp directly the signal must be amplified to meet Redbook standards and that is done with an analog circuit similar to what you find in a preamp line section. If the DAC has an amplified...
