Am I the only one who thinks B&W is mid-fi?
My 2 cents worth:1. Older B&W's seemed to be "voiced" like what you would expect from a British loudspeaker. They seemed to have a rich, laid back midrange with an acceptable level of clarity and detail.2. Newer B&W's use metal dome tweete...
Audio Refinement with Magnepan MMG
I am a former Audio Refinement owner. I did not use it with Magnepans. It does seem to sound more powerful than its 50 watt rating and it has deep and tight bass. It is well made and good looking. Why am I a former owner? Well, I bought it based o...
jukebox w. DAC, can it be good?
While I haven't used a jukebox as a transport, I would strongly recommend a jitter reduction device such as an Audio Alchemy DTI 2.0 or Pro. I would also suggest a more "forgiving" or rich sounding dac such as a Micromega DUO BS2. Another option w...
Interconnect for my little sister
Before I had my Aiwa changer modified, I got reasonably good results using Monster Lightspeed 100 toslink cable with it. For interconnects, I would suggest you check on the MIT closeouts that Audio Advisor is offering and get a low priced pair of ...
Speakers to match Audio Refinement Complete?
I would suggest avoiding anything with metal dome tweeters. I used one with B&W DM602S2 for several months, but went back to tubes.
What were your SACD impressions at NY show?
Apologies if this question is off topic, but did anyone hear anything about Sony supposedly discontinuing their SCD-DVP-NS500V? Or was this some kind of rumor designed to stimulate sales?
headphone setup 500 used.
In addition to the websites mentioned above, also check out headwize.com.Headphones are very personal choice. Not only does sound quality but comfort also matters. While open back headphones like Grado and Sennheisers usually sound the best, if yo...
Reproduction of acoustic instruments with tube amp
I have been a tube amp user for many years. Last year I decided to try solid state as part of a downsizing exercise. After 9 mo of misery I have gone back to tubes. I just got a tube amp and am waiting for a tube preamp to ship. I have only heard ...
Parasound or McCormack Transport?
I have only heard the McCormack once and the system is was in sounded good, but the rest of the equipment was not familiar, so I am not sure how much the transport contributed.I have owned a Parasound CBD-2000 for about 3 years and will not sell i...
Preamp for NADC370,please
After spending some more time listening to the preamp section of the NAD C350 into the AMC tube amp, I am starting to think the NAD's preamp section is a bit rough and electronic sounding. I am either going to get some mellow interconnects (I am u...
newbie need help on decision on buying an amp
While I have never owned the 3's, I have owned 2 pairs of the model 2 speakers.I did once drive them with a 30 watt tube amp, but this was in a small (12x15) room. When I moved them into a 12x26 room, the amp did not have enough power. Bass and hi...
Preamp for NADC370,please
While I have not heard the C370, I recently bought the C350. Nice sound for the money, but not good enough for me. I had already tried a more expensive ss integrated amp and that didn't cut it either. Since I had already sold my preamp (this was a...
Recommended amp for Quad 57.
The Berning Amp is the EA230 and I saw one for sale the other day here on 'gon. I owned one of these amps years ago but did not use it to drive Quads. Kept within its power rating, it sounded excellent. If you do not want to spend a lot, another p...
Smallest tube system for bed room
A portable CD player with a line output will not take up much space. That said, most of them stink sonically. I am using the Radio Shack CD3400, which is one of few portables that have a decent line out, but I am feeding its linestage into the ana...
Volex...
I think you can get them from Allied Electronics for a reasonable price and you don't have to buy 15 of them. They do have a $25 minimum. though. They are well made and well shielded. My experience with them is that they will do no harm and will s...
