What is the best solid state amplifier you have ever heard?
Bakoon make the best sounding SS amps I have heard.Composed, clear and pure and they have perfect timing. And it is the timing where most big SS amps seem to trip up.
How come Horn + woofer designs are not more popular?
The JBL Studio 590 speakers were fantastic speakers and a real bargain but JBL stopped making them.
JBL 100 Classic or Klipsch Heresy III?
Well the original L100s were probably the worst sounding speakers I have ever heard. The new ones would want to be a lot better.
Speakers under $50k that rival $200k+ speakers?
Great to hear that sort of report.I really think the NS5000s set a new standard for midrange reproduction. The rest is very good too.The drivers being all made from the same Zylon material must also help with tonal consistency and cohesion. If you a...
Speakers under $50k that rival $200k+ speakers?
I think the Yamahas are really for musicians and music lovers rather than audiophiles. They are not about sonic fireworks or awesomeness .They are about musical and tonal purity.Like Bakoon amplifiers and Supratek preamps.Using Anthem pre and power...
Speakers under $50k that rival $200k+ speakers?
The Yamaha NS 5000s are probably as good as anything regardless of price.Certainly in terms of sounding real and natural.Other far more expensive speakers might sound more impressive and more "hi fi" but I doubt they are better.
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go?
I have had my Supratek Cabernet 300B preamp for about ten years.Like others here a lot of other equipment has come and gone in that time but the Supratek has stayed. No other preamp I have tried sounds as 3D,as clear or as musically communicative.I...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
"Magico’s want very high bandwidth, highly resolving, Transparent devices in front of them. They want it clean and linear with some natural warmth or they will pout and stomp their feet and make a scene."Well that is exactly how I would describ...
Getting the best from Usher Mini Dancer II's
It seems to me these are compromised by trying to do too much. They go very low but you get a monotone sort of rubbery /boomy bass and the cone is moving so much to go low you also get some sort of cone break up or distortion before it crosses over...
Speakers for aging audiophiles - What's with today bass emphasis ?
Some rooms just sound bad with ported speakers and in a way most compact two ways are worse than the bigger alternatives because it seems that the makers give them a pronounced mid-bass lift to try to disguise their unavoidable lack of bass extens...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
Just one more thing then I will shut -up.The Supratek Cabernet preamp and the Audio Flight Strumento preamp are really in the same approximate price category.Just that you can buy the Supratek at wholesale price direct from the maker and thereby  ...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
Yes I agree with that description of the Magico S5s in general terms.Indeed that is how my brother's sound although he now uses high end Accuphase preamps and power amps which seem to sound more vibrant and open than the Vitus which he previously ...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
Well yes I agree in absolute terms the Magico S5s do not sound especially dark, cold, small and dull.My brother owns a pair so I know them well. That was a bit unfair. They are very good speakers. What I meant was that by comparison with  the sound whe...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
Well if you like your AF preamp then that is all that is important.I can see why some people would like them because they sound very composed, smooth and refined. We do not all hear or listen the same.I much prefer the more open, 3D.vivid,dynamic a...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
Well I think the Strumento #4 power amp is superb but the preamp is simply not in the same league and the power amp deserves something much better.Which is pretty much what Edgar Kramer said [if you read between the lines] when he reviewed them.Of...
