Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
Uberwaltz, In case of regular cable coiling doesn't matter, since cable is not a wire but the pair of them with opposite direction currents, that produce opposing magnetic flux.  That would be a common mode choke, and that's how non inductive bifi...
Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
grm,  I'm not sure if there is any formula, and case of your 8" cable shows it.  What counts into calculation of transmission line effects is transition time that can vary between 5ns for dedicated transports to over 50ns for average gear.  In add...
Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
grm,  I assumed typical 25ns transition time, but perhaps it is different.  Maybe your source is swinging faster, especially at smaller capacitive load (shorter cable).   Whatever it is - ears are the best judge.  Same goes for different 1.5m cabl...
Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
I tried it with .5M, 1.0M, 1.5M cables on my own DAC and prefer the 1.5M as well..I would also pick 1.5m from these choices.  8" (0.2m) shouldn't have reflections at all (not a transmission line).
Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
That's surprising.  Brightness would suggest a presence of the jitter (that translates to added noise).  What about clarity/transparency and imaging?  It is remotely possible that some electrical noise is injected from the source, possibly thru th...
best way to connect audioengine b1 to my HK3490 receiver. Optical cable or RCA's
Yes, optical will deliver all digital data, but since D/A conversion timing is extracted from this data, any changes in timing (time jitter) will convert to noise.  It will depend greatly on the quality of digital output as RCA connection will dep...
Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
grm, I'm glad 8" works for you.  It is safer not to get reflections to start with then trying to manage them, IMHO.
Question about length of SPDIF COAX interface cable length
I would choose 8" for sure.  Cable becomes "transmission line" when propagation time (one way) is more than 1/8 of transition time (rule of thumb).  Transitions for typical transport are about 25ns.  Allowed travel time is about 25/8=3.125ns, equi...

I noticed there is no info about recording process.  I remember most of older CDs had designation next to Compact Disk logo, like ADD - meaning Analog recording, Digital mixing, Digital media.  Some of classical recordings listed exact model of th...
SPDIF cable same as coaxial cable?
Does SPDIF just take the I2S format and just change into a single connection instead of 5 connections. No, they are two different formats.  The main difference is that I2S contains both data and the clock (separate wires), while with S/Pdif you hav...
Downside to R2R Ladder DACs?
George, this is very true - two power supply caps in parallel have smaller ESR, but they also have smaller inductance, often horrible for very large caps.  In addition few smaller caps instead of one large cap allows for better packaging (more eff...
Am I too big of a jerk, even for audiogon?
Eric, say no to drugs  :)Seriously, I think you were always very informative and very far from trolling - one of the very sane people here.
Downside to R2R Ladder DACs?
Laser trimmed resistors on the same substrate tend to have similar tempco and aging.  While aging can change initial resistance it is very likely to do it in similar fashion (same material) to all resistors keeping division ratios pretty much the ...
Seeking advise/your experience with wanting a to handle CDs/records without damaging them?
Important - when cleaning, wipe CD from inside hole to outside radially.  Avoid motion along the track.  Error correction works up to about 4mm scratches along the track.  Above that, up to about 8mm, it will interpolate missing data and it will s...
Seeking advise/your experience with wanting a to handle CDs/records without damaging them?
I keep al my CDs ripped on HD with backup copies.  That way I can always recreate CD for myself or copy for a friend.  There are ways of polishing the surface, but I would first rip it with good program to get perfect copy (I use XLD on MAC with 2...
