the marantz sound...mid-fi avrs...vs Denon....
Since 2002, Denon and Marantz have been jointly owned by D&M. According to the company the research and development and production of the two brands are combined, while the brands maintain speparate marketing and distribution. Effectively, it ...
Review: Harman Kardon HK990 Amplifier
very interesting, thoughtful review which eschews the usual, purely subjective cliches and gets into the guts of the machine. the poster illuminates how things like internal switching, seperate voltage supplies for amp/pre, etc. really can make an...
Denon PMA 2000 IVR vs. Arcam AVR 280
denon calls its 25th anniversary integrated amp the pma-a100. they claim it uses superior parts and has superior sound quality; just how much differentiation from the much cheaper stock unit is open to question. i heard the anniversary edition at ...
Harman Kardon 3390 & 3490
i bought a 3490 for my dad from harman direct for something like $225 and set it up with some polk lsi7s in a long, l-shaped room. it sounds good enough to make me question the value of much pricier "audiophile"-branded products. very powerful (hk...
newbie mania
fwiw, my high end dealer auditions proac with (50w) pass lab ss integrated and it sounds great, although i think it'll be above your budget. in any event, if you're using the computer as a source, you're gonna want to use an external dac, so you m...
Naim Nait vs. NAD 375BEE: Soundstage
no slam on the nad, which is a very well reviewed piece, but unless i was driving speakers which need megawattage i'd opt for the naim in a heartbeat--it's a clear case of quality over quantity of power.
Amp for DefTech speakers for $1200 or less??
parasound hca series or acurus mate well with avrs and will do you nicely
Best Towers Under $1500 for beginner system
i also like the totems and monitor rs; however, you'll want to assure that you're speaker isn't especially fussy about the amp you're driving 'em with--some very good speakers in your range, like von schweikert vr2 or revel f12, might not be a goo...
Klipsch Quartet: Suggestions for Setup & Pairing
blkadr:1.actually, the soundstage was wider with the mac tubes than with the pio solid state, though the pio (about 60 old fashioned watts) had better grip on that wild bass;2. the predecessor to the quartets in the same room (a large, low ceiling...
Klipsch Quartet: Suggestions for Setup & Pairing
again, thanks for the input. i will experiment with different amps (i don't have a t-amp, but will try an arcam integrated and/or adcom separates). subject thereto, i have reached some tentative conclusions:a. placement is critical for the klipsch...
Song covers that are better than the originals
agree with gdoodle on johnny cash. personally, i think the seeemingly endless series of his "american recordings" covers albums are way overhyped, but "hurt" is the song he was born to sing.i don't know if anyone's mentioned the ultimate cover ban...
You know you're an audiophile if--
gji, thumbs up, as they say, in jest the truth is told.
Klipsch Quartet: Suggestions for Setup & Pairing
guys, thanks for the good advise. i've toyed with placement/height per your suggestions and found the following:1. raising 'em off the gorund does indeed tighten the bass--i've got 'em on 18" stands and will try raising 'em further;2. they really ...
CD-Receiver Recommendations
arcam solo--i see em used alot for under a grand. nad also makes the viso, which meets all your criteria--i've personally had bad luck with nad gear, tho it sounds good when it works.
Repair or Replace Von Schweikert VS/1 Sub
i agree with kgturner--$300 to fix a sub you love seems to make sense. a good "musical" sub like rel or svs will probably cost you $500-700 used, so you're still ahead of the game
