Simaudio Lp3 vs Lp 5.3 I went from the LP3 to the 5.3 and then added the outboard power supply when it became available. Though I never went back to do any comparisons, I feel secure in saying that while the smaller unit stacks up well in terms of neutrality and tonal b...
Rega cartridge with a Simaudio LP3 or LP5.3 I've been using the Exact2 with the 5.3, and I'm completely satisfied. I previously had the LP3 in my system and did experience some overload, specifically on passages where a singer cut loose in the upper register. This still occurred at times (t...
Tannoy Prestige Speakers There's a dealer in NYC called Audio Loft that appears to carry the Prestige line (http://www.audioloft.com/).
Tube rolling Manley Shrimp I replaced the signal tubes with Mullard 4024s early on and felt that the sound became a bit warmer. As to the output tubes, my unit came with GE 7044s; I later switched to some Tung-Sol 5687s from the mid-'50s, but I don't recall this having much...
SS phono stage in $2k to $3k range... I'm very happy with my Simaudio LP5.3 with the outboard power supply ($2750 total). The sound is excellent, and there's a good range of options for gain, loading, etc. They also have a 10-year warranty, so they figure to be reliable.
Rega P7 dimensions? Duh -- I meant to say there's no easy way to remove the trim. Removing the plinth would certainly reduce the footprint, but probably to the detriment of the sound. :)
Rega P7 dimensions? On the P5, the dustcover can easily be removed and replaced: there are a couple of vinyl tabs at the back of the cover that fit into brackets at the rear of the plinth. The P7 should be exactly the same. However, I don't think there's an easy way ...
Record Clamp for Rega P5? I'm using the Michell "R" clamp on my P5 (got it from Music Direct) -- it's light in weight (delrin body and anodized aluminum knob) and doesn't figure to put any undue strain on the motor. I tend to use it only with warped records, and it seems t...
Rega P3-24 isolation ??..... any thoughts ?? I just inserted some Black Diamond Racing Mini Black Holes beneath the rubber feet of my P5, and I'm very pleased with the result. They're a bit pricey, though, around $45 apiece (unless you can find them Audiogon, as I did).
Is anyone using LAST? I've been using it for a few months without any problems. Though this hardly constitutes scientific evidence in favor of LAST, Fremer has a note at the end of his September column, indicating that he's heard from a number of people reporting no il...
anyone with experience of the "CD lathe" I've been using one for the past few months, and all I can say is, I can't imagine myself doing without it. The link below will take you to reviews on the Audio Desk Systeme website -- I took the plunge after reading Richard Foster's review in HiF...
Avantgarde in NYC? You're thinking of Rhapsody on West 24th (www.rhapsodynyc.com). I don't know if they're still representing Avantgarde and Manley, as neither is currently listed on their site. If you give Bob a call, I'm sure he'll fill you in.
Most Emotional Opera Melodies The common thread seems to be that they're well-loved works performed by some legendary singers (Schwartzkopf, Sutherland, De Los Angeles, Horne, Warren, Gedda, et al.). There don't figure to be too many duds in this group of albums, and I'd say i...
Quick, should I go for Arcam A90 or tube amp Until recently, I was using an A90 in bi-amp configuration with a P90 and found the combination excellent for rock and reggae, with exceptional clarity and very tight bass. I didn't try the A90 on its own, so I'm afraid my experience isn't directl...
Why is Monster M1000i interconnect overlooked? Transnova makes an excellent point -- Monster is undoubtedly suffering the proverbial contempt bred by familiarity. I've been using the M1000is (I paid $200 for a 1m. pair, Lak) in my second system, along with the M1.2 speaker cable, and they are ... |
