Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Most suspended tables have the motor fixed and platter/arm suspended to isolate the arm from motor vibration. that was the problem with wimpy suspension which would create oscillation and speed changes. This was especially true with suspensions th...
Crackling distortion
could be a number of things, but since you seem to have aligned the cartridge properly and the needle is new, I doubt its due to damage to the stylus. Your cartridge may be overloading your preamp on loud transients. If your needle was damaged, yo...
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Yes, the modern Sota uses an AC motor and electronic power supply in lieu of the previous DC motor. My Cosmos IV seems dead on, and since the motor is mounted to the same suspended sub assembly as the platter and arm, there is no movement between ...
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
I'm not sweating it. Just responding to a previous post that suggests the video shows the transrotor as being seriously deficient in speed regulation. I didnt get that from the video, but if others can point out how to get to that conclusion, I am...
Need recommendations for a Cartridge under $2K
My strongest recommendation for the Lyra Delos in the under $2000 range.
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
to me, it looks like the Fat Bob is running very slightly fast, as the line moves very slowly to the right on each revolution. When the stylus drag is applied, the line quickly moved to the left, indicating a slowing of speed, and then stayed ther...
Speaker Placement
I think what he is trying to say is that because our ears are 180 degrees from each other the speakers should be too.A little less than 180 because our ears kind of point forward. what he forgets is that we are not trying to listen to two sounds. ...
Thorens TD124 vs Sota star sapphire
If you are discussing a new Sota Star Sapphire, I dont think you can find a better turntable overall than that. The vacuum hold down works, without putting excess load on the bearing. The speed regulation is excellent and the workmanship without f...
Recommendation for analog set for $700
I have a number of cartridges that are more than 20 years old that still work perfectly. I havent yet had a problem with suspension drying out or collapsing. Maybe thats more of a problem in the desert, but our humidity here in Florida does not ca...
Gain challenge with Lyra Delos
I use the 60 db gain on my Manley Steelhead with 100 ohm loading. Are you still running at 47kohm?
Recommendation for analog set for $700
buy used. You can get much more bang for buck. try Oracle Alexandria, VPI HW19, Sota Star, Basis 1400, or a 70s era high end japanese direct drive and spend your savings on a good cartridge or phono preamp.
Power supply for Sota star
the older star had a power supply/vacuum in one external box and "stabilizer" in another box. the stabilizer isnt necessary to run the table, it just supplied a better power to the power supply. You can run the table on just the power supply/vacuu...
Sota Star Sapphire suspension question
both caps will work, but if you cant feel the suction, then the pump is not working. It could have a hole in the diaphram. Check with Sota to see about fixing or upgrading to the new pump/power supply which is quite a bit better.
Sota Star Sapphire suspension question
If you put your finger over the inlet to the pump, with no hoses connected, you should be able to feel some suction. It's not a lot, but it should be there. If so, then the pump is working. What makes you think it's not? There isn't a lot of sucti...
Sota Star Sapphire suspension question
I dont quite understand your comment about the tracking force and angle/weight being too heavy, so I cant comment on that. As for the vacuum pump, do you hear it running at all? What series of Sota Star do you have? Is it the one that has the alum...
