Overpowering my speakers
Not really unless you accidentally turn the volume way up.  This. Take some time learning what slice of your volume control position corresponds to good listening levels. It can be very nice to have more power than you need - no worries of amp ...
6H30 replacement
@astolfor  The Mazda silver plates are absolutely amazing, and the best 12ax7 I've ever heard as long as you're not depending on this 12ax7 to be a source of warmth.
Tannoy anyone? Cheviot Legacy vs. Stirling GR
@budburma That does NOT sound like my experience at all with new Tannoys. Sure, they can sound better with burn in but they shouldn’t sound anywhere near bad at hour 0. Burn-in isn’t going to fix that. I would NOT be a happy camper in your shoes...
6H30 replacement
Personally I think the 6h30 is a fantastic tube. In the ARC Reference 6, they sound neither exactly like traditional tubes nor solid-state, but actually sound more "right" than either (including excellent tubes like 6SN7 and 6922). Rogue Audio’s o...
Cartridge incompatibility, Soundsmith and Luxman
Most low/medium output cartridges with a typical 0.4mv - 0.6mV output and ~ 5 - 10 ohms coils should work well with that Luxman MC phono. The carts like the SS Zephyr and (I'm guessing) Benz LPS / Ruby / SLR are the outliers that have any trouble....
Cartridge incompatibility, Soundsmith and Luxman
When you use a SUT you should use short, low capacitance cables. Under 1m for sure, ideally 0.5m or as short as you can go. It has to be low capacitance - for example, the Audioquest LP / phono cables, and their Bridges / Falls IC cables are good,...
Would you pay more than 25% of MSRP for a used cartridge?
@mulveling Thing is nobody pays MSRP. More like 80% MSRP is common. So your used cartridge with rebuild that came out to 80% of MSRP is the same as just buying new but without any warranty and a lot of risk.. My point was having the rebuild opt...
Would you pay more than 25% of MSRP for a used cartridge?
Agree with most that used cartridges are too risky to buy. Many dealers will give you 20% discount so just buy new. Sure, but when I was younger 20 - 25% off a Koetsu still didn’t make it affordable to me. I bought my first Koetsu used, and it ...
Would you pay more than 25% of MSRP for a used cartridge?
I guess as audiophiles, we’re all gonna be OCD about SOME things - but hopefully not all things. I’ve been pretty relaxed about buying high-end used cartridges. If the seller has good feedback here, I’ll trust them - especially if they look like a...
Tannoy Stirlings on the way!
@astolfor Agree, the Kensington and Canterbury models are both wonderful, yet I’m very happy with my upgrade to Canterbury :) And yeah, the Definition 10A was a real head-scratcher, sadly. @jond Sorry - I just remembered there was some discus...
What phono cartridge is suited for metal and heavy rock?
iv always found most metal music badly recorded. It can be really hit or miss, even within a band’s catalog. It can also get expensive because even the ones that don’t sound great can go for a LOT of money, and you can’t trust the reviews on Di...
Tannoy Stirlings on the way!
Only problem is now I want to upgrade to Kensingtons! lol I have some kind of romantic attachment to alnico magnets. @trentmemphis Sometimes I feel like I could’ve just been happy sticking with the Kensington SEs and a sweet sounding tube amp ...
Tannoy Stirlings on the way!
@mulveling Totally fascinating writeup thanks but I have a question, why couldn’t they pair an Alnico magnet with the tulip waveguide? Or is it just tradition or users prefer the pepper pot sound? I’m not entirely sure of that answer (I’m not a...
Tannoy Stirlings on the way!
Ceramic magnets are often used as a synonym for the kind of ferrite magnets ubiquitous to speakers. From online: Ceramic (ferrite) magnets are composed of strontium carbonate and iron oxide. ... After the molding process, the magnetic material i...
Tannoy Stirlings on the way!
@trentmemphis Interesting. I thought all the Prestige GR models used alnico magnets. Nope, in the last few modern series Tannoys, alnico models are distinguished by the pretty gold/orange colored horn (the strangely named pepperpot), with an ...
