Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive? Daily beater 87 Toyota MR2, going out in style 2001 BMW 325ci. I don't even lock the Toyota when I go to the grocery store and I don't get mad when a large truck puts a parking lot dent on it. The BMW only has 9,700 miles.BMW
Buying LPs - where do you shop FYI: I have purchased used vinyl from eBay recently with mixed results...as in records arriving with way too much surface noise even thought they were listed as Near Mint and from seller with good feedback...the snap, crackle and pops have made me...
Multi Media to Go, Please. I agree with Sogood51 to check out doom9.net I like divx out of the avialable compressions. Note: It's a pain and takes several hours to do this...plus you want at least a 700Mhz processor to watch this on (something to consider if you have a lapt...
Who out there knows about Audio Research Pre's??? I agree with tubegroover's recommendation on the SP8 & SP10. I got an SP6C1 with the muting circuit moded. The C1 uses 12ax7 (4) and 6dj8 (2). The 6dj8 has about an 8 db better signal to noise ratio over the 12ax7. Mine is fairly quite running...
???Cartridge break in??? I have a Goldring Erioca MC that took a really long time to break in. I bet I loged in over 100 hours before I was happy with the sound. The bass got progressively tighter and lower while the highs smoothed out. Also, I feel that the sounds gets b...
"Parts upgrade" on crossovers -Any experiences? Sean, I used "foam in a can" type. and it was VERY messy and hard to work with. Once I do the damping sheet mod, I will post my findings. :)
"Parts upgrade" on crossovers -Any experiences? Sean, nice damping mod. I have used "Dyanmat" in the past (mostly automotive applications). I don't know why it never occured to me trying the stuff on mids / woofer baskets. Years ago I experimented with Altec Voice of the Theater speakers and re...
"Parts upgrade" on crossovers -Any experiences? After reading these replies, I think that I will leave my crossovers alone. Sean and Rives have convincing arguments ( I've heard in the past about "breaking in" the caps and talk about the system aproach to crossover tuning ). I was just wonderin...
"Parts upgrade" on crossovers -Any experiences? Tireguy, thanks for the reply. I know the KEFs have matched drivers and crossovers. I might at the minimum replace the push button connectors with quality binding post and the wire that goes from the board the the new binding posts. So far I am ve...

What is the life span of a phono cartridge? My silly response: It all depends on the cartridge. I sold a Linn LP12 with a Monster Alpha Genesis 1000 MC to a friend of mine years ago and he is still using it, I know that cartridge very well and it is still hanging on. The thing has got to be...
Need advice/info on various used ARC phono preamps My ARC SP6 C1 has a reasonably good phono section. My issues with this preamp are: Not enough gain for low output MC cartridges (unless you want to use a head amp). The amp is really picky about tubes compared to other tubes units I have owned. Th...
Advise on phono cable please I use Van den Hul M.C. D502. Opened up the sound from the cables that came with my Linn Axis. I can't be sure but the previous owner mentioned it was Siver Conductor cables. I compared the Axis cables vs. Vdh and the Vdh came out on top without re...
$250 Computer Sound I ditto what Nikturner920 mentioned about Monsoon Audio. I have owned the MM-700s for over 3 years and I have played the hell out of them. They have good size sub, planar technology (somewhat directional sound -need to find the sweetspot). and the...
How to convert MP3 to CD on hard drive w/o burning I agree with Chelentano. The mp3 format is lossy compression (aprox 11.5 to 1 for a 128 kb/s). -You can't gain anything by converting to cda or wave format other than being able to burn a cd and play in your cd player. |
