Mad Scientist IC’s @williewonka the dac is the Jolida dsd non- bluetooth version connected to a Bluesound Node 2 via a Nordost Silver Shadow digital cable with bnc-rca adapters. Speaker cables are diy silver over copper ribbon 10 AWG with cable lifters. The hum is...
Mad Scientist IC’s Speakers hum with the Schroeder- Dueland IC’s; they don’t hum with the Mad Scientist IC’s. No other changes to the system.
has anyone tried chinese cables? FWIW, I took a chance and bought 30’ of silver plated, 7 nines copper ribbon cable, 12 strands 16 gauge each, FEP insulated, or so it said. Built a bi-wire set and in my system they sound amazing. I suppose I’d have to borrow/buy commercial prod...
Passive preamp issues or? I purchased an ebtech hum-x and it made no difference. The Bluesound is quiet but the dac isn’t up to par with the Jolida. I have a feeling I’m going to have to stay with the passive pre- it’s just a little frustrating knowing improved sound qual...
Passive preamp issues or? No hum from the Bluesound....
Passive preamp issues or? I put the pre-amp back in the loop. Dead quiet- decided I couldn’t live with the hum. FWIW- and I don’t clearly understand the logic behind this, if I keep the amp connected to the speakers and disconnect the dac from the amp, the hum is worse. D...
Passive preamp issues or? From Michael Allen at Jolida/Black Ice- “the spec is 47 K ohm.” The volume control is analog.
Passive preamp issues or? Reread your post, I’ll try to confirm with Jolida.
Passive preamp issues or? Output impedance from the specs page is 47K ohms
Passive preamp issues or? @georgehifi- so when I turn the volume up, the speakers hum, mildly— then as I turn the volume up all the way, well past safe levels, the hum disappears and I just get white noise hiss- again, not that loud. If it was a grounding issue would the...
Passive preamp issues or? The hum is non-existent with the volume down- I’ve got nos Telefunkens in the dac—wondering if switching to lower gain 5751’s would make a difference?
Tube Rolling the Jolida/Black Ice dsd Dac I’ve been pretty happy with the old stock Telefunkens. After the SR Orange fuse, I added a Nordost Silver Shadow with bnc/rca adapter. It replaced a Silnote cable and for the money it was a good purchase. In my system, resolution went up anothe...
Tube Rolling the Jolida/Black Ice dsd Dac My Jolida dsd dac’s fuse is spec’d out at 1 amp slo-blo, so that’s what I purchased from SR. Takes a while to burn in and it’s kind of a rollercoaster ride, but to my ears clear improvement in soundstage, bass and air between the instruments. Wo...
Tube Rolling the Jolida/Black Ice dsd Dac @jonstine I’m the OP- been using NOS Telefunkens that I’m pretty happy with. Are these the British Mullards from Upscale you’re referring to? Pretty tempting. About 2 weeks ago I replaced the fuse with a SR Orange- pretty nice upgrade.
Why do you think Bi-Wiring improves the sound ? FWIW, I build my own loudspeakers. The most recent pair, a 2-way, has the woofer and wide-range driver on two separate boards, isolated from one another. To my ears, they sound best bi-wired. |
