Gapless playback of FLAC files.
Since my Sony Blu-ray player does everything OK except for gapless and the real gapless players seem to cost around 10 times more than the Sony, I just leaving things as they are for now. Gapless tracks are a small percentage of what I listen to a...
Gapless playback of FLAC files.
The player gets the files either from an optical disk that I insert (CD-R or DVD-R) or a USB drive or flash drive. A Red Book CD can also be used in the disk drive. Of course, the gapless issue does not depend on this. My player just doesn't do ga...
Gapless playback of FLAC files.
You only gain something from gapless playback if two or more tracks are intended to play with no interruption at all. A brief silence ruins this effect. If I use a computer as transport, the only way I can connect to my dac is with USB. My blue-r...
Gapless playback of FLAC files.
I am now sending the files with the Blu-ray and spdif cable. I wanted to do it without a computer because I wanted to leave the computer free for other things and I can't send 24/192 or dsd files over usb. The audio sounds quite good from the Blu-...
Using Spek to see if an audio file is really lossless after doing noise reduction.
To answer my own question, I now see that Goldwave noise reduction has many parameters that I don’t completely understand. Each one ends up influencing the results on Spek, so I’ll have to try different settings of Scale, Overlap, FFT size, etc., ...

Volume level of commercial CD's.
There is no problem that I see with conversion. The CD's themselves play too loud and so do the FLACS that I rip. I think the mastering is just too loud for my system but Wavegain improves the volume. Interestingly, I have a bedside radio with a ...
Testing stylus wear.
Update: I got my new 2M Blue stylus from Fluance, even though I don't own their TT because most other outlets had the stylus on back order. They also gave me a $10 coupon which covered most of the tax (funny that a Canadian company has to collect...
Testing stylus wear.
I saw some of the Shure photos on the internet. It looks like it boils down to smooth tip surface for good styli and dented or non-smooth tip surface for worn. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to see the "cat’s eyes" but the smooth tip surface should ...
Looking to Try a Passive Preamp
I own the Jolida Glass FX DAC III and I was curious about the 47K output impedance figure because my preamp lists 13K as the input impedance and the audio sounds OK. Well, I just called Jolida and they said that the actual output impedance is 600 ...
Conrad-Johnson Discolored (rusty?) Allen screws on side of MF-2550.
I'd be inclined to just get a bunch of rustproof screws and replace them but I want to first find out if they have to be a specific kind of metal and what they are fastened to. I'd hate to mess up the job of re-fastening new screws to components i...

Problem with Thorens TD-203 speed adjustment screws
Since writing that two years ago I got my TD 203 turntable back from the shop long ago. It was still a little off so I gave it another try, turning the screws as gently as I could. The main problem was that each tiny turn made a relatively big cha...
