which el 84 amp or integrated
The baby is killer- I would a/b it against whatever else you get and make sure the price increase is justifiied. IMO- the baby is just one of those amps that does everything right. It is better than their el34 and I have preffered it to many menti...
Any "lifestyle" speakers actually good for music?
Quad L'ite
Upgrade from Quad 11L?
My assessment was that you could not throw enough amplifier at the passive 11/12s to get them anywhere near the actives. The actives @ I also thought that the L2s were better than the Ls but a lot of people, maybe even the majority- prefer the ori...
Trying Magnepans, need advice
I ran MMGs for a while in a room that size with excellent results. It sounds like you have a dedicated room which is key and actually gives you better options than a larger shared space.I would (did) run them in the nearfield with a sub well away ...
Nht2.5I and B&K amp a good match?
That sounds nice to me. NHT (especially the older stuff) has a reputation for being full bodied and maybe a tad hot in the treble. B&K is known to be a touch warm so I bet they mate well. The 2.5 is closely related to 3.3 which is one of the b...
CDP breaks and I move to computer-based...
Core Audio is part of the MAC OS. Kmixer is windows- two different animals. In a MAC environment typically you would set core audio to 24 bit- set and forget and let itunes upsample everything which it does well. The other option is changing core ...

The other thing you want to be sure of is that you have coreaudio set to output 24 bit. Then let iTunes worry about getting the files to core audio in the right format. TRy a 24bit download while you are at it and prepared to be blown away.
Used Rega Planet or Apollo vs. affordable PC audio
A fire would also wipe everything out too.MP3 is a different story- although 256k mp3 is getting pretty transparent but aac is substantially better and almost completely transparent @ 256k imo.
Used Rega Planet or Apollo vs. affordable PC audio
My litmus test is exactly the same. Ill be honest- I cant hear any meaningful difference between 256k AAC and lossless but I do rip to ALAC because who knows what playback technology might offer better resolution in the future. However, my reserva...

Learsfool- I agree with you but one point that I would mention is that what audiophiles believe is meaningless. We represent a tiny fraction of people who have 180 degree goals versus 99.9% of consumers. Audiophiles themselves cannot support a phy...
Maggies a waste if only 3' from backwall?
Right Russ69 I agree. The 1.6 should not be discounted- it is a fantastic speaker when it is fed well and has space to breath. I can only imagine that the 1.7 is better as Magnepan does nto have a history of introducing new models unless the diffe...
Maggies a waste if only 3' from backwall?
"I do love the maggie sound, but I can't see a 1.7 competing at 5x over it's head. Help me out here, what am I missing?"What you are missing is that you don't have the space to set 3.6s/20.1s up. I highly suggest you raise this question at the Mag...
Maggies a waste if only 3' from backwall?
I would really look at the new 1.7. Placement and power is everything with these speakers. Get a nice subwoofer or two and a really good amp or two. My opinion is that your room just isn't large enough to support the larger units- and that is okay...
Firewire DACs?
KRK Ergo for $499 with Lyngdorf room perfect room correction on board. It does a lot more too. I am in love with mine.

Physical media is dying- I don't think there is any question. And I argue the point that the younger generation still wants something they can hold. I am fairly young and I don't even see hints of this! Next step is local storage in my opinion. Th...
