Best MM?
My experience with the Audio-Technica VM540ML is great. So good that I own 2. The VM740ML is basically the same stylus and coils with a different body.
I wonder how many audiophiles there are these days

Cover songs that are better than the originals.
Nirvana doing Bowie’s “Man Who Sold The World”
Cover songs that are better than the originals.
Much as I love The Byrds, it almost pains me to say Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers did a much better job with “Feel A Whole Lot Better (When You’re Gone)”.
Is this out there
+1 for Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the Center of The Earth. I got my copy at a Goodwill store, not the best shape,  but it plays well. Alan Parsons Project Tales of Mystery and Imagination is pretty good at times also.
Static electricity pulled the rubber mat right off the Turntable!
See if you can get a electrometer, which measures static charge in coulombs or at least a gold-leaf electroscope, then use it to determine if the charge imbalance originated with the mat or the records.
Zerostat Milty really?
@fromunda I use a Milty Zerostat every time I play a record after the Discwasher brush which is treated on the leading edge only with Discwasher D4+ fluid. I’ve found it very effective in neutralizing static charges that used to cause ticks and po...
A New Ground -- Benefits of introducing the Synergistic Research Active Ground Block SE
@folkfreak why do you endorse products that are obviously overstating their technical merits? Why avoid debate and discussion on the very topic that you posted? The claims made by akiko audio regarding their so-called “phono booster” are nonsensic...
A New Ground -- Benefits of introducing the Synergistic Research Active Ground Block SE
JEA48 asked Atmasphere:Would you please expand..... What is the reference for the arm ground wire connection to the ground terminal/lug on the phono preamp chassis? I guess I always thought it was the DC power supply ground. Isn’t the signal groun...

Atmosphere said:I did a survey of a number of grounding systems by interviewing the owners and having them do a few tests (as best as I can make out, these were similar to the SR, but none of them were SR units). What I found was that in audio sys...
Turntable
Also, that model of turntable and it’s sister model 1700mk2 are prone to failure of the tonearm cuing and auto return at end of play due to a easily replaced drive belt from thetonearm motor to the mechanism. I have a few of these belts if you nee...
Turntable
If you can get the 120 volt transformer from a seller parting out another 1600mk2 or 1700mk2 or 1800mk2, that puts you in the best position, as it’s a straight swap. If you are in the Toronto area, I could do the work for you.
What is the fascination?
@ferrari275 good point. The engineering that went into turntables of the pre-CNC age was good ole fashioned blood, sweat and tears. No good design came easily back 40 and 50 years ago. There is also something to be said for work ethic and the non-...
Converting stereo single ended to balanced mono?
If you want hifi, ditch the equalizers. They will only mess up the phasing and add distortion and noise. Less is more.
