what makes a tube sound the way it does?
I also have a tube preamp, and I have been wondering the same thing. One set of tubes can sound different than another set of the same type. To me it seems that this happens when the internal construction is different, that is, the plate, terminal...
Decca Jubilee / Dynavector XV-1s / ZYX / Allaerts
Any comments on the entry-level Allaerts? Perhaps someday I'll Finish with an MC2, but I need to start at the beginning and enjoy the ascent to the summit.
Packing list for VPI Scout?
Thanks for the info, really appreciate it!
Bel Canto Ref 1000 ice monos- heard/compared to??
As another point of reference for you, I've got the REF1000's driving Zu Druid (101 dB, 12 ohm). Best amps I've heard. And the speakers definitely like them. And they don't heat the room way up. At first I thought it was nuts to pair up 1000W with...
Electrostats
Martin Logan Aerius were one of my favorite speakers in a small room. Placement and room geometry can have a big impact.

pj10128, that AirFoil looks like exactly what I wanted. Except that they won't support Windows (seems to be a philosophical position).
squeezebox versus airport express
Edesilva, thanks for your post. I will look into the NEC disk drives, I'd given up trying to find a quiet drive. All my problems go away if only I could put a dead-silent networked PC driving the DAC. Thanks for the pointer. But if I can't get the ...

I've been using AEX with a Benchmark DAC, I have to say it sounds good and works very well. The playback is seamless, allowing anyone in the family with itunes (ie all of them) to play music on my system without having to go near it. In the past, ...

Jea48: I live in Santa Cruz, CA. I've called some local electricians, but so far I haven't invited anyone out yet because I want to research a little bit more.Specifically, our house is on a hill that is a big rock. Dig down 8" and you hit this ye...
hum from nearby high-tension wires?
Turned out to be a loose connection. There was no radio noise, even right under the wires. But now I know a lot more about grounding, thanks for the advice.

plastic water pipe. Sigh.
hum from nearby high-tension wires?
Update: it may be due to poor grounding of the house. I found the ground spike, connections to it are corroded. Plus I found a degenerate cable connection that was not in use. Oddly, disconnecting this hidden cable connection actually made the hum...

Dreadhead: well, consider that I live in an earthquake zone and commute some 75 mi per day; these are probably my biggest risks. And just being 49 years old has its risks - bell-curve-wise, many of me are already dead. I don't smoke, but I like wi...

Jea48: maybe 80 feet high. Insulator about the height of a large owl or hawk (maybe a foot?) (I often see them sitting on the line).

These aren't the monster tower kind of transmission lines for long distances, they are local distribution type within city limits that have lower emissions. The only devices affected are sensitive ones like phone preamps and pickups (and, I suppos...
