Speaker Technology over the last 10 years
Johnk, "Crossovers have not made major gains but parts quality has as has computer design for crossovers."My argument is that there are less people than ever who actually understand crossovers. Partly because of the programs themselves, but mostly...
Low SET versus High SET
Presuming I have a sympathetic pair of loudspeakers to mate the amplifier with, and admitting to being willing to live with the inherent tradeoffs of the marriage, I prefer the lower power SET amps. There is a certain magic there that I feel the l...
Down grading with better /= sound
I have, several times. Most recently with a Dynaco ST70. Makes you wonder why people spend so much money in this hobby.
What matters most in speaker design?
Jeff, ATC makes (truly excellent) active loudspeakers - I believe Shadorne owns a pair. You'll find a lot more active loudspeakers in pro audio than this hobby. One reason being audiophiles really run the gamut in terms of power amplification, and ...
What matters most in speaker design?
C - crossovers.Cabinetry, ala veneers and finish rule the day, with exotic drivers following closely behind. Cetainly a smart strategy, as this hobby is one where people listen with their eyes and their wallets. However, in my own experimentation, ...

Confucius say man who goes through airport turnstyle sideways is going to Bangkok.
What is your routine for break-in of cd player
Thanks, Ed! I must say I haven't broken in many cables in the past few years (am I missing something by being off the cable merry go round?) since I've gone to this break-in strategy, but I will certainly employ it thanks to you.I realized another...
What is your routine for break-in of cd player
I suggest turning the player off at night, while leaving it play in the daytime. Kind of 16 hours on, 8 hours off.The thermal stress involved during the heat up and cool down cycling seems to both speed up and make for more effective break-in.
US only sales WHY???
I've been liquidating a lot of gear here on Audiogon over the past several months. And, based on my previous experience with sending gear back and forth from Canada, I explicitly say, "USA Sales Only!" It was simply too much of a headache on many ...
ordering from Michael Percy Audio
Rodman999999, "Many in here seem obssessed with making comments about things(or people) with which(or whom) they've had no experience." Man, you've got that right. We should be thankful that we have people like Michael Percy doing what they're doin...
Ayon CD-2 sonics? thoughts? opinions?
Budburma, thanks for your updates! Most people here love to glow over whatever gear they are running. But, your honest perspectives of what you have heard along this journey should be applauded - thank you.
Any VAC CPA-1 preamp owners here?
Please contact my friend, Michael Phelps - Audiogon username Sufentanil. I believe he had this model, and I've listened to it several times in one of his former systems.I'd give my own personal perspectives, but his opinion would be far better inf...
Droplet CD Player: Contacting Consonance
Compasmar, you have the right e-mail address for Opera Audio/Consonance. And, no, surprising as it is, you are far from the only person in need of support from the company currently being ignored or not receiving even the most rudimentary of repli...
What tubes for ST-70
My experience was the same as Tommy583's.Had a pair of Sovtek 7199 in my bone stock ST70. The sound was so-so, maybe a "C" or even "C-" on the traditional letter grade system. Put a pair of RCA 7199 and it was literally the biggest improvement I'v...
