Aric Audio Super 2A3 owners - favorite tubes?
@alexberger said: "NOS 5U4G RCA is not something special. I like Ken-Ran 5u4G. But Linlai 5u4g are on the same level and very cheap. I had a U52 GEC/Brimar brown base. It was really great, better than other stuff I had but it is crazy expensive no...
How effective is the ultrasonic V-8 lp cleaner?
This is a pretty old thread. David Ratcliff, the guy behind the V8, passed away in around 2019. I think the "burnishing" Harry W heard was the result of the chemistry without rinsing- (I wasn't a reader of the old VPI forum so I'm taking this seco...
Insurance for system
@emergingsoul -thanks for the compliment. This system had its beginnings in around 2006 and has evolved over the years. (There were several previous systems going back to 1970).  Having moved to Texas, I am in a larger room and that, along with so...
Insurance for system
I revisited insurance coverage on the hifi and record collection when I moved from NY to Texas at the very beginning of 2017. DOT insurance is by gross weight and a joke. I was covered by Chubb, which I started using years ago- they insured variou...
Think I ruined stylus
@tsbarro - did you examine the stylus under magnification with a good light? (You don't need to remove the cartridge to do this). Playing the dead wax /run out groove is not a big deal- I do have some records where the run out is not "locked" and ...
Am I right for this forum?
@tomic601- I don’t know if you are joking or serious, but I think a lot of audiophiles get caught in a vicious circle of trying to improve playback quality and then looking to yet more gear to improve it more, to the point where it is less about m...
Jazz for aficionados
I listen to a lot of post-bop stuff from the '70s- not fusion, more in the vein of spiritual or soul jazz. Cecil McBee appeared on a huge number of records (and is still with us as far as I know). The jazz scene went sort of underground-- the "lof...
A GOOD dry record cleaning device
@j-wall -Isopropyl Alcohol, not India Pale Ale. Not that I'm advocating its use in the context but it is not an uncommon approach. Acronyms are dangerous, aren't they?
Are You A Disciplined Audiophile?
My reaction to the question is a little broader than letting something "settle in" before I evaluate it critically. There are all sorts of people in this pursuit of hi-fidelity, from very dedicated enthusiasts, to people "in the business" to more ...
A GOOD dry record cleaning device
I have lots of different "dry" brushes- I’ve always had mixed results- I know some people "mist" them with some IPA and pure water to better pick up the surface detritus but I don’t do that. Most of the brushes can get the dust all lined up nicely...
Use of a splint when changing cantilever and stylus
This site shows a variety of replacement cantilever/stylus assemblies. They all appear to use a hollow tube which would snug onto the "stub" (what is the term for this?) of the old cantilever. It seems to me that there is little need for a splint:...
What happens when the stylus tip wears out on a $12,000 cartridge?
Harold Weiler wrote about the wear and care of records and styli back in the mid-’50s. The book is long out of print and can be found, among other places, on the Shure site (though as far as I know, Shure had nothing to do with the original public...
Kind of Blue
OK, FWIW, one of the challenges in musicology librarianship is descriptions in catalogs with appropriate cross references. Not easy. But think about a large repository that is made available not only to scholars but to the average person- how do t...
Tube Depot's "NOS vacuum tube sale"
Andy (Vintage Tube Service) is the best I have experienced within the US, but he has some limitations. He’s pretty old school too, which is fun but don’t expect instant gratification. I’m surprised Tube Depot would sell pulls as NIB/NOS- I don’t q...
Kind of Blue
@frogman -thanks very much, nice to see you. I'd be interested in looking at how a music librarian catalogs stuff. Oh, I'm getting on the phone with one in a minute or ten. I'll ask her. I tend to like material that bends the genre a little- wha...
