Overall my vote for best is VERTIGO (Bernard Herrman). I listen to it once a month or so year round.

Runner up would be the terrific Johnny Mandel composed soundtrack to I WANT TO LIVE, with Jerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, and others. Wonderful music.

OK, another runner-up: Ellington's great soundtrack for ANATOMY OF A MURDER.

Someone mentioned Bernard Herrmann and I enthusiastically concur—especially Vertigo.

but I think my favorite sound track is from “Memories of Murder” as composed by Taro Iwashiro. It’s such an ecstatic marriage between music and story… also one of my favorite movies, as enhanced by its haunting soundtrack. If you like crime mysteries/thrillers, I highly recommend you see it.
