Can't get audio to my Pioneer to AppleTv

I have a Pioneer VSX-531D receiver and tried to connect it to AppleTV via HDMI. Video is fine but no sound. I was able to connect the AppleTV via bluetooth to my receiver and control audio from AppleTV but I want better sound quality. Can anyone give me some suggestions? Im not very literate with a/v receivers but appreciate the help.
