Monitor is an abbreviation of studio monitor. Monitors were initially designed for recording studios and are meant to be listened in the nearfield and used small rooms. Monitors have a reputation of being very revealing and detailed speakers. Bookshelf and/or stand mounts are designed to be more versatile in their placement and sound. Today, monitors and bookshelfs have become marketing terms in many instances.
Confused about
I understand the meaning of bookshelf (as opposed to stand mount or floorstander/tower) Can somebody throw some light on what a "monitor" is ? I have seen some large bookshelves like the "Magico Mini 2" sometimes referred to as mini monitor. As far as dimensions and weight of most bookshelves go.. i would be never call such speakers "mini" in anyway.
