Edgy Trip Hop Recommendations

I like a new band out of the UK called Burial. Hard to find in vinyl but well worth seeking out. Has a very nocturnal feel to it, like driving around the inner city at 2:00 am in the morning. One of the better 2008 "finds" in my collection.

As already posted, Massive Attack's "Blue Lines" set the template for this music and Portishead's "Dummy" followed in its path. Both our essential CDs to have in your collection.

Nitin Sawhney has produced some nice mid decade work that also stands out. I especially like "Prophesy."

In addition to the above suggestions, I would also recommend Lamb, Hooverphonic, Olive, STS9, and my current favourite, The Cinematic Orchestra. Check out their recent album - Ma Fleur and also Every Day.

Gotan Project. Trip hop with a tango vibe, or vice versa. Some interesting music at times.

I second Kruder and Dorfmeister. You can also check out OM records out of SF. They have a lot of classic downtempo stuff going back many years, all of which is available on vinyl if that is your thing. You can also go to netmusique.com and check out their downtempo channel, you will get a lot of great artist recommendations from there.
