Hooking up the Topaz Isolated Transformer


Hello everyone,
Could someone teach me to connect wires to the Topaz transformer please?
I would like to connect my 240V power line to the Topaz input and get 120V out of it.

If its isolated, how do you access it to hook it up?

If you understand the diagram, go ahead diy. IF in doubt, hire an electrician.

I just found a picture online related to my particular model of the Topaz. I posted it in my system page. As the image, I am supposed to remove the Shield wires on both input and output H4 X4 and move them to the ground post.
Could you please let me know if my thinking was corrected?

The wiring diagram is clear, but be sure to pay attention to how the center taps are wired, that is what changes it from being isolation to step down.
I think I am able to connect wires myself. I have ran 4 dedicated lines from the main panel to my music room without any help.
But before I start, I still really need help from our community to confirm the connections in the diagram is correct. The reason I am asking is because when I open up the unit, I saw the shield wire hooked up to X4 and H4 which contradicts to the diagram.

OK.This diagram show S1 and S2, the connection still the same, parallel=120V, in series=240V

NO!  S1 and S2 connections are not the same. 


The wiring diagram only shows them connected to H4 and X4 respectively when the transformer is wired as a step up "Grounded System" or wired as a step down "Grounded System".

The S1 shield is only connected to H4 only *IF* H4 will be grounded and become a "Grounded Conductor", a neutral Conductor.

The S2 shield is only connected to X4 only *IF* X4 will be grounded and become a "Grounded Conductor", a neutral Conductor.   

Like I said in my above post The OP is wiring the xfmr as a step down transformer. Primary of xfmr will be fed from 2 Hot Ungrounded conductors. S1 Must be removed from H4. Period!


What is the purpose of the Electrostatic Shield in this power transformer? What if I left it open?

You may find this of interest. Notice the 120V  balanced connected loads on L1 to neutral and 120V L2 to neutral connected loads are in series with one another.

Jim, just for my curiosity, why don’t you recommend OP move S1 to ground terminal? Isn’t the electrostatic shield need to be grounded to divert primary noise to ground?
