JVC mc-t100 step up (30 hom indicated) What cartrodge suits?

Dear @serge8  : That sut has 20db of gain and this is the important characteristic for you can mate with your cartridge depending of the cartridge output level and the phono stage MM gain. The bandwinds of that sut is very good: 10hz to 100khz.

Normally those 20db could be enough for cartridges with over 0.3mv when the phono stage + line preamp has additional 40 db  gain ( more or less. ), maybe you could use it even with 0.25mv if the electronics have low noise levels.

These type SUTs were made for specific cartridges the companies made, same for many Ortofon and Denon SUTs. I definitely would not choose this SUT.

IF it has 20db of gain, that is an x factor of 10.

cartridge output x 10 less a bit of loss will be the signal strength sent to the MM Phono RIAA Stage. That stage has a minimum signal strength sensitivity (as well as maximum). That stage has RIAA eq combined with gain up to line level to move on to an amp.

x factor 10 squared is 100. typical 47k divided by 100 = 470 ohms. That is the impedance that will be shown to the 47k input.

formula for MC loading, i.e. guidance, not hard rule is:

cartridge coil impedance x 10 = target impedance to be shown to 47k input.

working backwards: ’guidance’ match: cartridge with coil impedance of 47 ohms.

I suspect JVC had a cartridge with a fairly high (still low) output strength and a high coil impedance that this SUT was designed to match.

I would assume this SUT was designed for the contemporary MC-L10 cartridge, which had a 30 ohm source impedance and 0.25 mV output. Generally speaking 20dB gain is on the low side for this output level, but the Victor direct couple systems were subjectively more powerful than their output level specs suggested. How this SUT will work out with other high impedance cartridges is different to predict, could be ‘hit or miss’.

I just told you, so any cartridge with that kind of output levl.

Take a look to different manufacturers models as: Ortofon, VDH, ZYX,  Koetsu, Audio Technica, Lyra and many more. I told you too that if your phono stage has low  noise level you can try carrtridges down to 0.25mv.
