My Cary SLP-05 volume control does not work

My preamp has been boxed for 3 years and when I hooked it up there is volume to the speakers but the volume control does nothing to raise or lower the volume and the remote does nothing. An ideas?

Are you using the "tape out" jacks rather than the outputs that are lower down on the back panel? Just a thought and good luck.

I think @viridian nailed it.

Do the two balance volume pots change the output?  It would be unusual for both the main and  the two balance pots to not work.

This may or may not be related but I had a Cary SLP-03 preamp and the volume control from both the unit and the remote control stopped working as well as would do the opposite when trying to raise or lower the volume from either place. My buddy had the same preamp and the volume would not work at all after he had it unplugged for few months. In both cases they had to be sent back to Cary for new volume pots, they said they were "mistracking" and needed replacement. I also had to send mine back twice for the same problem.

Check switches like the bypass/loop switch?

Did you read the above responses?

#9 is the Listening Level control. (Volume Control)

The volume control is a motor operated potentiometer.

@knorpi , Can you turn, rotate, the knob manually? Counter clockwise, to full right clock wise? A 360 degree rotation. (Do not force the knob to rotate in either direction). If you can turn the knob, the volume heard through the speakers should change the volume up and down. It’s just a potentiometer... If it turns, rotate it several times back and forth. Doing so will help clean the sweep.

In addition to my above post:

.

The special Cinema Bypass feature routes the balanced or unbalanced cinema inputs directly to
their corresponding outputs, bypassing all the SLP 05 circuitry and turning over control to the
user’s cinema processor. The cinema bypass circuitry may be engaged by toggling the Cinema
bypass switch on the front panel of the preamplifier. If the SLP 05 power switch is turned to the
off position, the SLP 05 automatically defaults to the cinema bypass mode.

Make sure the Bat Handle switch #8 is set to Preamp.

.

Note Bat Handle Switch #6.

6. TAPE/MONITOR
In the UP position this bat handle switch will activate the input jack on the rear panel
labeled tape-in. This may be used for a tape recorder or for any other line level input..

Try setting it both ways... ???

.

Note on the front panel two pots #10.

10. INPUT LEVEL
These two individual controls are used for individual left and right channel balancing.
In the full clockwise position these controls are basically out of the circuit and allow
full input levels to flow to the listening level (volume) control potentiometer
