Phasemation MC

Hello,

I moved to MC a few months ago after owning many MM cartridges. I bought an AT33EV, which is on a Clearaudio Performance DC with an AT1000T step-up and a tube preamp. I love the sound and feel like I should have switched to MC sooner!

I'm going to Japan in two months and thought it would be a great opportunity to buy a cartridge, as Japanese models are cheaper there than in Europe.

If I had to criticize the AT33EV, I'd say the low end could be more precise (but not less deep), and the highs could be more open (but not harsh).

I've heard a lot of good things about Phasemation. Do you think the PP200 or PP300 would match my setup and meet my expectations?

I own a PP200 on a Rega P9/RB1000 with an Allnic H-1200 phono preamp using Nordost Heimdall 2 interconnects. Previously had a Goldring Legacy on the same set up. Clarity with a larger and more open(airy) forward soundstage were the most obvious improvements. The Legacy had a tighter more controlled(direct/darker) sound with more aggressive bass(not as clean as PP200). Some prefer this type of(mechanical) sound explaining why Hegel/Naim have a following. Personally I don’t like any frequency range to dominate especially the bass region. To sum it up the Phasemation PP200 places itself more on the finesse side of cartridges while still having some bite but maintains a clean/open Hi/Fi(compliment)sound. You might want to consider Dynavector if you want a more aggressive/dynamic sounding cartridge.

Thanks for this. Aggressive is certainly not what I'm looking for but dynamic for sure yes. I'd rather a bit laid back than agressive sound but I don't want it to be boring. So far I've been from a 2m red to blue to AT150 to clear audio virtuoso always with improvement but it's really when I moved to MC that I've been happy with my records. MM always had something harsh in the upper range

@inca21   I'm always hesitant to judge/comment on a single component due to a system needs to be judged as a sum of parts(components)not an individual component. Back to the Phasemation PP 200, it is an engaging cartridge due to a slightly forward midrange and overall balanced presentation. If your system is treble biased or forward this might not be the best cartridge.

Not treble forward but my speakers are very neutral so if something is harsh in the chain it won't obliterated it :/

Honestly I don't really need a new cart right now and I like mine, but because I have this trip planned to Japan I think it would be a missed opportunity not to get the future replacement

@inca21 hi man

I'm looking for mc under 1k, and I'm thinking about PP200

have you managed to get it? I wonder if it's so good as people say.

thank you.

Hey @fisha , I’m in Japan right now. So I’ll let you know when I’ll be back ;)

I’m still hesitant between the 200 or the 300 but I couldn’t find anyone who tried both (if someone can tell me the sonic difference regardless of the price). But for sure I’ll grab one of them

There is a large following of Phasemation in the UK, I am irregularly able to experience there products in use, and have not been exposed to a experience not enjoyed, albeit a Phonostage or a Cartridge.

I have not witnessed others experiencing the Brand being upset with the demo' either. Good appraisal is the usual outcome.

Phasemation PP200 sounds very accurate, precise, w/ Accuphase AD2850 phono-pre. Second similar cart I have is Phase Tech P3, which on my opinion is slightly better (PP300 alike).

@inca21

hey

have you already back from Japan?

I'm waiting for exited story of buying PP200(300) smiley

meanwhile I've got Hana sl

Nagaoka MI is your best bet in Tokyo.  MP500 is an excellent cartridge, and IMO it competes with or betters any MC anywhere near its price range.

Hey,

@fisha sorry for the delay I had trouble with the connection to Audiogon.

The trip to Japan was amazing of course ! It is such a paradise for records lover. There is a lot of quality record shops and audiophile bars.

I had a very good deal on a PP300 and I'm glad I bought it. Straight out of the box it is very good ! From the 33ev it is an other world. The level of details, the dynamic, the stereo field everything is way better. It sounds real !

The pp200 is probably already a great cartridge

I am a advocate of Phasemation, my experience had of their designs to date, have always left me wanting to say very good things about the products demo'd.

The PP 300 can be found with a hunt for close to $1K, near $1.2K with shipping and Taxes added if imported.

For such an outlay, an Hour of replay can be as little as a Dollar Bill.

Add a Dollar to the latest album purchased to get a very special groove interface.

Keep your LP's purified clean and there is potential for another 1000 Hours giving close to $00.50c per hour.

Neil Antin has created the perfect method for purifying the Vinyl LP, his guidance is Tip Topety Top.

Give it up to 200 hours of use and report back, you'll have many adjust their shortlist.

What's not to like about your choice that is made, absolutely nothing.

Do keep in mind any MC Cart' of any value, can't repel the contamination that is to enter the inners of the cart' and take up residence on Armature, Coils and Damper.

A Third Party Service, given their chance to carry out a surgical clean and a Tension Wire adjustment if required at between 550 hrs - 750 hrs will free up the mechanics, improve the Damper Interface and let the Cart' sing beyond what could ever have been imagined.
