The correct fix is to ground the motor, which is closer to the tone arm when it is nearer the center of the record.
A wire to the case of the motor (and what the heck, the spindle bearing as well) and then to the ground of the arm does the trick.
Dunno why they don't do this themselves! They have to have known about this problem for years now.
