yes of course you can contact me. you can call me at the office at 585 367 2390 or e-mail me at bobby@merlinmusic.com. i will be in my office today saturday the 20th and sunday the 21st for a period of time. thanks, b |
Bobby, . Would you mind if I emailed you off line or called you ? Please email me directly with a number or your email address. . Thanks, Larry . |
the presentation would be smooth, clear and sligthly lean imho. to be honest, the mm might still sound better with this product mix because it is slighlty less centered in the mids and is slightly fuller in the deep bass. this would tend to counter balance the sound of your cables to a degree. if you do not mind me asking, what speakers are you using now? and what are your sound preferences? thanks, b |
. Bobby, . Thanks for the help on this one. The source would be a Levinson 390s CD/pre-amp, Ensemble Dynaflux XLR interconnects and Pegasus(now called Phoenix) speaker cables from Shunyata. . sitting distance would be about 8-9' from center of speaker line - speakers could be up to 2' from back wall. . Does this sound like the MX's would do well in this environment ? . Thanks, Larry . |
it would be fine as long as the wires you use have a neutral tone and your source products do too. the mm is ever so slightly better suited to ss as rule. but as i said, if the wires/source ancillaries are neutral and your room is not huge, you'll be singing. |
. Bobby, . How would the VSM-MX pair up with an old Levinson 27.5 SS amp (100 watts/channel) ? . |
i just responded to a personal e-mail that sounded a lot like this one. are you vt? if not, i will respond here. thanks, b@m |
Bobby: Can you tell me the difference between the MM and the MX. Is it primarily in the cabinets or is the crossover also very different. How close are they in performance. Rough guess. |
i am really glad you are all so happy. and yes dautch, the anthem will make a huge difference. let meknow how it sounds wnen you get it, okay? remember, if you guys ever need anything, let me know and i'll give you a hand. b |
hi spence, careful set-up? well maybe but it is really quite obvious why. We have designed a speaker that does not control the directivity pattern so a thoughtful placement in the room will give you the best results. since the speakers have a high q and a neutral tonal balance they like to be closer together than the listening distance. the listening distance of around 9 1/2 feet is just about perfect to get the most out of them (depending on the room and set-up). the distance from the wall behind them is not as important as the listening distance. then you find a spot in the room where boundary reflections are minimized and boundary reinforcements are adjusted to taste. then bingo, you are all set. if you want great sound/performance in any room you have to be thoughtful of what you are trying to achieve. the more neutral the speaker and critical the listener the more effort will be have to be made. b |
I completely agree with Spencer. My MMs are driven with what amounts to mass market junk ($4000 Sony receiver). I can't wait to hear them next year, once I've saved up to put an Anthem processor and multichannel amp in place! |
Lesson learned, Bobby. When we talked through placement of my VSM-MX's, you led me to a position about(~41in.) the same distance from the side walls; the difference is that my 14'width yields the "extra" foot from speaker-to-speaker. It never ceases to amaze me how your design sounds great in so many different size/shape rooms. As everyone always says, careful speaker placement is SO critical to getting the most enjoyment from your system...Cheers, Spencer |
hi guys, i think rob is correct in his spacing as adding another foot or so would get the side wall distance dangerously close to the the distance that the woofer is off the floor. this would be a square and cancel bass plus activate the side wall reflections to a greater degree. the speakers don't need to be pulled appart a lot because their horizontal dispersion is so broad. they work more like a pulsating sphere would. this type of set up would make for a sense of depth that equals the width and produce a more dense image and music envelope. just mho. b |
I have the VSM-MMs, which incorporate most of the mods found in MXs, and are finished in studio (ash) black rather than glossy (piano) black.
My speakers are about a foot farther apart than yours are, Rob, and I have to concur with Spencer that something closer to 7 feet seems to yield the best results. Your mileage may vary, of course. But perhaps it's worth a shot?

Congrats, Rob. As another VSM-MX owner, I certainly appreciate your comments. One question for you regarding placement: Have you tried them a bit further apart(~ 7ft)? Seems like you've got enough room width to do this. Without doing the math on the room modes, it seems like a tad more space between speakers might be a good thing. Cheers, Spencer |
I agree with your assessment having had the opportunity to listen to the VSM's before and after the upgrade. They must be one of the best buys out there. Plus, looks to die for. It's almost unbelievable how they will fill a large room with extreme SPL's without a hint of breakup. Your comment about so-so source material is spot on too. |
