what is the proper loading

somewhere greater than 10 ohms. (Recommended load impedance: > 10 Ohm)

what cart is it anyway ? That is some heavy tracking force...a real record eater.

BTW - heavy tracking force doesn't really "eat" records .... rather very low tracking force in conjunction with high skating.

The correct loading with vary with your interconnect cable and how sensitive your phono section is to RF. If it does not care about Radio Frequency energy at its input, you will find that loading does not make much of a difference.

The loading only affects the circuit at RF frequencies, and the correct load will dampen the RF oscillation that can be associated with the coils of the cartridge and the capacitance of the cable, which forms a tuned RF circuit.

This is why loading is critical with some systems and not with others.

the loading choices on my phono amp for MC are;

17ohms
18ohms
20ohms
22ohms
69ohms
100ohms
220ohms

Which would be the best? I am thinking eiher 69ohms or 100ohms if 50 ohms is the correct load as Marakanetz says.

This makes it simple.

Listen to the two extremes (17 & 220) and determine what you like and dislike about each.

hopefully the likes and dislikes will be apparent at which point try the 69 for a bit which puts you in the middle and see if you get the best or worst of both worlds.

If you get the best... look inbetween the values either way to fine tune. If it sounds worse in the middle, look at cartridge setup and repeat.

You must've got a great phono.
Sweep through the whole range. You will less likely fall outside of it.

Dear Fromunda: That Ortofon, because only Ortofon states all that cartridge information ( no other manufacturer did/do it. ) IMHO could works well ( agree with you. ) between 69-100 ohms but you have to check 220 ohms too.

Now, to load an LOMC depends on the phono stage design and how cartridge and load react and that's why you have to test several loads for the cartridge. Take in count that as lower the load as lower output too, so when you will testing with different loads you need try to even SPL on your phonolinepreamp because our ears are very sensible to tiny changes in SPL and normaly likes sound with higher SPL: take care on this subject.
