@mammothguy54  I’ve been doing the 2 tank cleaning method with the Degritter since I purchased the gadget last April.  Takes twice the time but worth it in the end.
I do groups of records, like 8~16 at a time.  After the Tergitol bath, I use a bamboo dish rack to store the records upright between bathes.  After finishing the group, I switch the tank to distilled water and run the records through again for a rinse.

Regarding Tergitol, I’ve found that using more than 0.7ml of the concentrate in the Degritter tank (1.4l) leads to suds coming out of the slot-not a good thing.

daniel

@tomic601  Jim, did you find/order an extra tank?  Are you stocked up on distilled water?  Walmart (gulp) had the best price at 89 cents/gallon for a while.  But with the recent supply chain problems, the price jumped to $1.19/gallon last week (+10 cent bottle deposit).  daniel

For early Pink Floyd fans, I received an email from Rough Trade today saying they are taking pre-orders for a 2017 remastered version from the original mono tape master of "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn".  180gram vinyl to boot.  Release date is stated as March 4, 2022.

@boxer12 If you opt for the repress “Amanita”, be careful with the splatter vinyl. I don’t know who pressed it, but I went through 2 copies to find one in which both discs were free of surface “pocks” from the splatter process. Otherwise, outstanding record.

Big improvement over my previous Benz Micro 2.0

You got me beat.  My previous cartridge was one step above a cactus quill (a Shure SC39ED, the radio station gold standard for many years).

@trhester1

fully upgraded LP-12, Ekos, and Krystal

How do like the Krystal?  I have the same TT/arm with a Kandid and Urika in the plinth.  I’d read some criticism the Kandid was a bit sterile and lacking “warmth”.  However my experience has been quite the opposite I guess because of the vacuum tubes the signal encounters after leaving the Urika.

@bslon +1 X "Los Angeles"

Remarkable record, particularly the first Slash pressings.  Engineering/mixing were superb given X was still considered something of an outlier at the time.  I'm sure having Ray Manzarek producing it helped a lot.

Have you heard the recent (August 2020) X release "Alphabetland"? (don't know if this link will embed properly)  Original lineup, like they never stopped.

@tomic601

Happy New Year to you and Trish.

No worries Jim.  You and Trish get well soon.  Lots of quality listening time and good coffee (with a brandy chaser🍷).

If I get any replies about the duty cycle of the Degritter, I'll let you know.  There is a lot to tell, but not here.

By the way, thanks for the Spencer connection.  I'm looking forward to that.

daniel

Ok, technical question time.

Are you using a Degritter?

How many records do you clean in a session?

Do you clean records in rapid succession (one after another) or do you wait a bit between runs?

How long do you leave the machine off between sessions?  Like overnight, couple of days, a week?

Do you pre-clean records in another gadget like a Spin Clean?

I have one but am curious about other people's experience.

@big_greg

They probably think I have lost my mind but are polite enough not to say so.

They probably think what kind of joy weed you been smokin'. 🤣

@big_greg

I had my kids and grandkids over for a late Christmas, so no vinyl yesterday.

Do they recognize or even care about the records you listen to?

@boxer12 Tim, the Superior Viaduct reissues of Spacemen 3 are great.  180gm vinyl pressed by Record Technology.  Remastering is first rate.  I think Steve (Superior Viaduct) has sold out but I’m sure if you’re looking, they can be found.

How’s the new tone arm by the way?

Merry Christmas!

In the spirit of the moment, it seems the right time to spin the Ze Records “A Christmas Record” with various artists on the label from 1981 on white vinyl.

One notable track is “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses. On the 40th anniversary of this record, Chris Butler recounted the grief the band went through writing and recording the track. What surprised him even more was “Christmas Wrapping” would become their defining song rather than “I Know What Boys Like”.

My wife did not want my hi-fi on last night.  Party pooper!

My wife is a good sport and rarely objects to my hi-fi escapades.  What riles her is the buzz box regulator transformer for the hi-fi cleverly hidden behind a chair in the living room.  It muffles the buzz so I don’t hear it in the hi-fi cave.  If she wants to read in the living room, I’d imagine the 60hz buzz gets old pretty fast.

Someday I’ll get off my lazy arse and move the buzz box under the house😁

@bkeske

Just caught this scrolling back today. Oh man, I might have to snag that. I have none of their recordings. Hard to believe these guys didn’t produce more and get more recognition. Excellant stuff. Thanks!

Brian, you may wish to consider the 2 newest CDs along with the vinyl.  “The Inward City” was produced by David Thomas (long time fan and supporter) and recorded/mixed at Suma by Paul Hamann.

By the way, a bit delayed but glad your mother is doing better.  I worry endlessly about mine because she’s 2500 miles away.

Puffball, That must have been a couple of great concerts!!!

Indeed they were Tim.  Both shows were at small venues.  The musicians, including Fripp came and mingled with the audience asking their opinion.  The California Guitar Trio were an offshoot (maybe more like successor since Guitar Craft ended a while ago) who still perform (before COVID) around Southern California.

I don’t believe there was a picture in the CD of how they perform.  They form a horseshoe with Fripp on one end.  Anywhere from 7 to 9 other musicians form the group.  Fripp leads but the others perform their parts without any cues needed.  They all played the same Ovation hollow body acoustic guitar but with steel strings.  That might be evident from the CD.

Guitar Craft was a residential program at Claymont Court in West Virginia that Fripp held for several summers.

One aphorism Fripp used with the group was “If where we are going is how we get there, then we are already where we are going.”

@boxer12 , It’s too bad none of the craftys ended up on vinyl.  I saw them perform twice and picked up the companion cassette which has many more tracks than the CD.

@bkeske if you’re a Numbers Band fan (15-60-75), I received the remastered version (by Paul Hamann) of “Jimmy Bell’s Still In Town” on Exit Stencil records last week.  Excellent remaster of a live recording at the Agora (the Mistake was downstairs) in Cleveland on 16 June 1975.  They opened for Bob Marley and the Wailers.  You can purchase directly from the Numbers Band website.  The “Jackleg” LP is a Robert Kidney solo and also quite good.

@boxer12 Tim, since you’re on a King Crimson roll, do you have any of Fripp’s work when he was doing The League of Crafty Guitarists?

Only time for one tonight,

Tim, a suggestion for you, Helvetia “Essential Aliens” on Joyful Noise.

@boxer12 caught that Windy & Carl a few posts back, +1 and a tip of the hat for Blues Control “Local Flavor” which arrived last week.

Been dealing with mundane house maintenance chores so not much record spinning lately.

Took some time this afternoon to relax and listen to some records my wife had before we got married.  All part of the shed find series.

i questioned @boxer12 about these Fire releases, and he gave them a thumbs-up, so that was good enough for me 😉

++ Tim 👍

@bkeske Brian-no offense meant.  I just happened to wandering through Fire's website looking for something else and came upon the Pere Ubu information.

Further digging revealed that Paul Hamann embarked on the Ubu remastering around the end of 2016.  He had pretty much concluded the project in February or early March of 2017.  By that time, Paul's health was deteriorating rapidly.  To his credit, he really did work right up to the end.  And we lost so much with his passing including Suma.

Daniel

@bkeske I had asked about the reissue Pere Ubu on Fire Records if they had been remastered.  You mentioned there was no indication either way on the jacket.

From Fire’s website:

“For this reworking, Paul Hamann at Suma has transferred from the original 2-track analogue mix tapes to digital at the highest resolution available which, is at least four times the resolution of the original. The tracks have carefully been re-mastered by sonic architect Brian Pyle so as to capture the unique qualities within.”

This would have been sometime before September 2017 as Paul died in mid-September.

I haven’t picked up any of them yet to compare with the original pressings.
