@sourpuss123 I realize everyone’s setup is unique and different, but I’ll mention that I’ve gone on the Funk’n’Groovin (Telefunken), Mullard, RCA “black plate” and so on 12AX7 adventure.  What I found that outdid the others far and away is the Brimar “box plate” with double mica support CV4035 from the late 60s/early 70s.  Made in England for the British Military and readily available for a fraction ($70 not long ago) of the aforementioned manufacturers.  Very open and spacious soundstage.  Works great for classical, jazz, rock, noise, you name it. Enjoy, daniel |
@slaw Hi Steve, no I have not heard Dean’s latest solo work.  Maybe I’ll look for it next Saturday when I wander out for RSD second drop (18 June). daniel |
@slaw Thanks Steve, appreciate your message. daniel |

@bkeske Hi Brian, I’ve not tried the CBS Hytrons.  I have tried very late production  (1987) Philips branded 5814As (made at the Sylvania plant) for the military (marked JAN).  Pretty decent actually when compared with GEs from the early 60s and RCAs from the same era.  I use them in an amplifier driving the 300B output power triode.  Actually I’m using a mid-60s era RCA 12BH7A which yields a much larger soundscape (30% longer cathode/grid/plate) with nice vocals.  If the filament supply has the capacity for the additional load of the 12BH7 (300ma vs. 150ma for 12AU7), it’s an interesting test. daniel |
@bkeske @noromance  I noted your exchange about 12AU7 and 5814 dual triodes a few pages back.  Just curious Brian, what brand 5814 did you use? daniel |
@boxer12  Hi Tim, I happened to pull the gray top border jacket  “Lonesome”.  “Truckers Atlas” is on the blue top border jacket.  Did your version come as 2 records in 2 separate jackets (vs. a gatefold)?  Strange…but great selection of Modest Mouse.   |

And following on to my previous vinyl pressing information, According to the RIAA, CD sales increased in 2021 for the first time in two decades. Still, streaming accounts for 83% of revenue versus 11% for vinyl and CD sales. However, of the 11% of revenue, vinyl sales accounted for 63%.  This continues a 15 year trend of vinyl’s resurgence. https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2022/03/14/cd-music-sales-increase-first-time-two-decades-riaa-report/7701647283004/ The RIAA 2021 report. https://www.riaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/2021-Year-End-Music-Industry-Revenue-Report.pdf Note that this refers to new CD and vinyl sales only and only the US sales statistics. |
Ever wonder who is pressing vinyl these days around the world? (hint: way more than you think) https://vinyl-pressing-plants.com/all-vinyl-pressing-plants-list/countries/ Note, this is not only pressing plants, but brokers, mastering and technology companies related to vinyl pressing. And some pressing plants do only one size of record. If I counted correctly, there are 30 operating pressing plants in the US. Â |
@boxer12  You’re very welcome Tim.  And they’re  “Michiganders” to boot. @reubent  You’re very welcome.  The only XTC I have is a CD compilation “The Compact XTC-singles from 1978-1985”.  It has their standards like “Generals and Majors”, “Making Plans For Nigel” and “Are You Receiving Me”.  I bought it in England when I was working there in the late 80s.  Pleasant memories of Bristol. daniel |

@boxer12 +1 for Flying Saucer Attack If you like FSA, you might be interested in this Movietone Peel Session release that I'm still waiting to receive. Allegedly released on 28 January. Like FSA, Movietone were also from Bristol and members of Third Eye Foundation, FSA and Movietone (among others) worked together in each others band.  |
@boxer12  Thanks Tim.  I have both a Canadian and UK pressing of “Another Green World”.  By far the UK pressing is the better version. |
@noromance  Brian, impressive collection of a very overlooked group.  I first learned of the Incredible String Band from an extremely rare interview by the reclusive brothers known as Boards of Canada who are also from Scotland.  They mentioned one of their favorite groups are the Incredible String Band.  |
@noromance  +1 for The Incredible String Band, I only have them on CD but am always on the lookout for vinyl Daryl Hall “Sacred Songs” RCA 1977 (without John Oates, produced by Robert Fripp who plays guitar and Frippertronics) Takayuki Shiraishi “Missing Link” Studio Mule Japan 2019 Tom Recchion “Proscenium” Elevator Bath 2012 Normal Brain “Lady Maid” Vanity Records Japan 1981 |
@bkeske What condition is your "Dark Horse" in? By that, I mean any peculiar surface noise? My "Living In The Material World" is awful. Terrible surface noise which is evident throughout the record on both sides. The record was allegedly pressed at Capitol in Jacksonville, IL. Generally, they do a pretty good job. But on this release, early '73 according to Discogs, they used some kind of mold release agent that won't come off. It's visible from the matrix throughout the grooves to the edges of the record on both sides. I've tried several surfactant treatments and 3 trips through the Degritter to no avail. I compare this with John Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" plus the Red and Blue Beatles double LP compilations both from the 1973/74 era and pressed at Capitol-Jacksonville which are pristine.  |
Beatles “1962-1966” Capitol 1973 (the red jacket double LP compilation) The Bomb “Speed Is Everything” No Idea 2009 (Jeff Pezzati from Naked Raygun side project) The Fall “Perverted By Language” Superior Viaduct 2017 reissue of Sanctuary Records 1983 release Deerhoof “Deerhoof vs. Evil” Polyvinyl 2010  |
@tomic601 and @boxer12 Jim and Tim, yeah, Deerhoof have evolved a lot over their long history. They formed in 1994 and I first saw them in 1996 when I was working in San Francisco. Grux from Caroliner recommended I go see them. I was totally on board after the live shows. Amazing they've been together for 28 years and counting. daniel |
@tomic601 Jim, good news about the second tank for the Degritter. Utah Phillips, Happy Traum, Peter Alsop, Dan Crow “Silly Songs and Modern Lullabies” Briar Records 1980 Windy & Carl “Songs for the Broken Hearted” Kranky 2008 Dadamah “This Is Not A Dream” Grapefruit 2020 Robert Bensick Band “French Pictures In London” Smogveil 2016 |
Plastics “s/t” Island 1981 This is not a rerelease of Japanese recordings but separate recordings done at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in 1980 and mastered to the vinyl format by Ted Jensen at Sterling. Quite a different sound from their earlier Invitation Japan records. Island took a big chance. It didn’t pay off. Garlic Boys “King Of Smell” Alchemy Japan 1989 Garlics were a punk band from Osaka and well known in Japan. They were together and doing shows until 1997. Zoviet France “The End Of Nothing, The Beginning Of Everything” Vinyl On Demand Germany 2020 (45 rpm DMM, done by Pauler Acoustic in Northeim, Germany but I’m not sure I like it, rather thin and anemic sound) Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her “Give Them Back To Me” Hate It, Damn It Records Japan 1995   |
Steve, I went through the same thing initially.  However, I was overlooking the fundamental purpose of the Tergitol.  It’s not the Tergitol doing the cleaning, it’s the microscopic imploding bubbles that do the cleaning.  The surfactant, in this case Tergitol, is there to reduce the surface tension of the “water-air” interface on the surface of the record.  Reducing the surface tension allows the bubbles more and better access into the grooves of the record, the whole object of the exercise. The trick has been to find just the right amount of surfactant to get a good cleaning but not generate suds or leave too much residue behind after drying. Definitely a work in progress. daniel  |
