James, I have three
Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic. Typical Karajan, which isn’t bad. From a 6 LP box set ‘Karajan Great Symphonies’ Deutsche Grammophon. I’m sure this was released as a single album at one time.
Mehta with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. London 1979. Mehta is always interesting. Good recording, a punchier, more distinct and pronounced phrasing. I do like Zubin, a lot, but he has his own way of interpreting.
But, if I had to pick one, it would be Evgeny Mravinsky conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic. From a 1974 Deutsche Grammophon box set containing 4,5,&6. Mine an Italian pressing. Overall, this one just seems to get it all correct to my ears.
