Haydn Joseph Franz

Hi, I need help with classical music selections, and since you guys helped me out so much with Jazz selections, I have decided to ask for your help once again. I have become really intereseted in Violin Sonatas and Trio Sonatas (specifically Violin, Keyboard, & Cello) by Haydn and was wondering what some of the better recorded cd's are. I have no idea where to begin, so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, Petrty11. The following suggestions are for the performance -- but the recordings are mostly good enough. There is a complete Trios recording by Philips (9 CDs) with the Beaux-Arts Trio. IMO, better performances of certain trios are:
Trios 22-25; T Mathiot (pf), A Manze (v), Jaap ter Linden (cello) / Erato
Trios 25-27 / 32-34 / 35-36 (a different CD for each); P Cohen (pf), E. Hobarth (v), C Coin (cello). On Harmonia Mundi, good recording.
Trios 42-44: R Levin (pf), V Beths (v), A. Bijlsma (cello) / Sony Classical.
You may want to give Symphonies 88, 95, 101 a listen (if you haven't already). IMO, F. Reiner/Chicago S O (RCA) is a good performance.
Cheers!
Get what ever is recorded by the "Beaux Arts Trio". None better. Not sure about Violin Sonatas by Haydn (if there really are any).
The Levin recordings are on original instruments. If you like the sound of the historic pianos (fortepianos) and strings, then they are a good choice.
