I use a Sony AV3000. It does not cost much ($200), is built well, and has a programable screen. Additionally, you can program the "fixed" buttons.

You do have to use 2 hands, but it is easy to use while sitting on a table.

I do not know if you can use the code; however, programming is easy enough and you have more control over which button does what.

I have abused mine for a couple of years now and it still works!
For my Wadia 861, I’m using a “One For All” Model 8810 learning unit – as I recall, $30-$40 at Wal-Mart.

The Wadia codes are NOT programmed in, but transferring (learning) the codes from the Wadia to the 8810 is easy. Plus, the 8810’s keys are backlit – nice for in the dark listening.

I’m using the “One For All” in place of the Wadia, for its backlite keys, and I programmed it to engage my room’s track lighting – eliminating the need for two remotes. BTW, you can also program macros to perform sequences of events

While the instructions for this remote don’t specify that most any/all of its keys can be programmed, they can. Lots of information relative to the functions of this remote (over and above the instructions that come with it), and many others, can be found at the following site: http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-one4all/list.cgi.

“One For All’s web site is: http://www.oneforall-int.com/comfiles/index2.html.
