Sound quality notwithstanding, I would never listen with the lid up as the Linn hinges are quite cheesy and I would not want to think about the lid slamming down mid-record, sending the arm screetching across the platter. Not a pleasant thought. So - down or off.
When I had my LP12, I packed the OEM dust over in the box to protect it from scratches and bought a dust cover that covered the whole table. And I always played records with the cover off.
Would have to disagree that the hinges are cheesy- I’ve had my LP12 18 years, original hinges, and the hinges have never been a problem. So while the hinges may not be a heavy duty affair, they are entirely adequate for their purpose
