Vandersteeen 2wq (or any sub) in small room

Hi everyone,

I have an 11x16x8 room for music, with Vandersteen 2ce's and Aragon 8008BB amp. Tried all manner of placement, but still feel the bass is a bit thin (I realize that Vandersteens produce musical and accurate bass, but this is my perception). I have been reading about the merits of the 2wq sub in improving the Vandersteen sound, but these advocates usually have much larger rooms. Is using a sub in a small room a fool's errand? Would teh 2wq be a particularly finicky addition? Should I return to my efforts at room treatment with bass traps? Thank you.

download Vandertones..it is free..spend $40  on a Radio Shack analog spl meter and see what your Two's are doing in the room today....
then try to optimize placement
then go on a hunt for Vandy subwoofers or just bit bullet on a pair of Quatros....
there was a used pair in Socal here on the Gon for under $5 K
insane value..including new

I've had Vandersteens for over 30 years.  I've had the pleasure of phone conversations with RV and met him many years ago.  He knows of what he speaks!  John Rutan at Audio Connection has a more congenial manner than RV and as has been said here, knows what's going on with Vandersteens and system set-up.  In my 13'5" wide, 18' long 7'6" high dedicated room I have a 2wq behind each Treo CT in the corner!  Once you get them dialed in, specifically the efficiency of the main speakers so the subs mate perfectly you are good to go.  I think your room should be able to accommodate two Vandy subs.

Nope, it gets the attenuated signal from the amp. The sub is configured to compensate for the attenuated signal and amplify it properly. Hence, its' seamless integration.

Hifiman, I am moving from the 3a sigs to the Treo's (non CT). I only have the 2w subs. Do you find the 'q' settings very useful? PM me if you don't want to mess up the thread.
