It looks like this post is somewhat dead, but I would like to share my experiences with them and ask a little advice...
So my background is in professional AV, and I ended up working in a very high-end music shop (a lot of 2-channel) for a year out of college before moving to commercial AV. Anyways, they were a Transparent dealer, so I got good deals on them and always had them in my system. I moved from XL generation to MM to MM2 stuff (Super XL to Ultra MM and finally Reference at the MM2 stage). I could always tell a difference and was happy with them except for the fact that I have always had Vandersteens (1Cs to 2 Sigs with a 2W, and now, finally, Quatros), and Richard has always recommended true bi-wiring. Transparent stopped making their bicables in the MM generation, opting for jumpers. I saw some Satori Shotguns on here, read reviews, and decided to give them a whirl for the very reasonable price (1/6 of my MM2 series Reference!!!). It was an amazing difference. The speakers opened up so much and sounded so much more natural. I couldn’t believe the performance for the money.
Thus, I got into buying and trying their other cables, starting with Absolute Silver interconnects (balanced) and Absolute Copper. I think the Silver are a little better in terms of air, imaging, and ambience, but I prefer the Copper for a little bit of a more rounded sound. It’s splitting hairs, but they had maybe a little more weight and lower midrange to them. Just slightly "warmer," although I hate to use that term. Neither sounded warm or cool. They both sound extremely natural, just the chocolate vs vanilla thing people have already referenced.
I even bought a pair of Gen 5 Transparent Reference XLRs to try. I loved them, and in some ways they were better (more on that in a moment). They are outstanding cables and truly in rarified company. However, in others, the AZ were. At the end of the day, I couldn’t justify keeping 3k+ interconnects when these $800 ones (used) were nearly as good and in some ways better (keep reading), especially because if I did a full G5 Reference wiring of my system, I would be at 3k+3k+6k for the speaker cables, and that is just crazy. I have that money, but I would never spend 12k on cabling (before power cords--ha). I’d rather invest it and make more money.
So my question/concern is this. I am now even trying AZ power cords in the systems vs Transparent (Reference level MM2X and just bought a G5 Ref), and I cannot get past the fact that cymbals, especially, but brass in general do not sound real to my brain through the AZ. They sound bright and less defined. Through Transparent, they sound real, like brass. I like jazz and rock--percussive music--so this is a huge deal to me, and while the AZ are way less expensive than some brands for interconnects and speaker cables, they are about even with Transparent and other high-end brands with respect to power cords.
Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone compared their power cords vs. Shunyata (or interconnects/speaker cables), about whom I seem to hear things? I just cannot bring myself to buy and demo more stuff and shift to another completely different brand unless from the direction of someone who has actually compared them in detail.
And finally, my overall impressions of AZ vs Transparent are that the AZ have an almost indescribably natural quality to them. The imaging is some of the best ever, and for the first time ever (when I switched to the Satori), I heard a lot of depth in the soundstage. Frequency range is not curtailed on either end. My only, ONLY gripe with them is this timbre that seems off (and the slightly less information aspect). I am wondering if I can correct that somehow in the cabling, like copper vs silver or shifting their models.
Transparent, on the other hand, is "quieter" (I would argue against that point and just say a darker background from which stuff emerges) and has more information in the music, which is hard to ignore. Everything sounds like it is more closely mic’ed--a huge advantage. There is "more." The timbre is excellent. Cymbals sound like brass cymbals in my brain. The PROBLEM with them is that while imaging is also great with them, there is less ambience. You can’t hear the air in the room in which the recording took place, which you can with the AZ. Vocals sound slightly recessed compared to the AZ, which I attribute to the being less "air." With AZ, my brain identifies a real person there singing; with Transparent, it doesn’t register as quite being real but a recording. Since vocals are what communicate the emotion of music, it is hard to take second-best in this regard and go with the Transparent. On the other hand, it is hard to ignore the increased information and better timbre with the Transparent. Thus, I made it about price, and again, if I was splitting hairs between cables with a price factor difference of about 4, I chose AZ. Still, the audiophile in me wonders if there is something that would give both of the best attributes. The never-ending quest! :D
I have had the realization that Transparent cables sound "gated," and I wonder if someone with more technical/electrical expertise thinks that is indeed intrinsic to networked cable designs. When in the "on" state, the information passed is wonderful. However, because they have an "off" state in order to be quieter, they are cutting out information that is actually essential to portraying spaciousness and ambience. Nothing should ever be artificially cut, IMO. It should all be about getting from Point A to Point B in the purest way possible.
My long two cents...
