dedicated center channel?

I read that center channel design is not so good, that regular speaker can be used instead (placed horizontally?)
Since lcd/plasmas dont need shielding, is this a good idea?

Unless you can get the mid range and tweeter at the same height as R and L main then it is debatable whether you would not be better off with "phantom center"....
I have tried it all ways. No center channel, "phantom". Center channel below the TV. Center channel above the TV. My conclusion? For multi-channel audio, SACD and DVD-A, and for movies, the center channel is needed. For movies the center can be placed anywhere, but below the TV is best. For SACD and DVD-A place the speaker at the same height as the Left and Right main speakers.
