The Good Stuff

There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds. If it sounds good it's successful; if it doesn't it has failed. --  Duke Ellington

This purpose of this thread is to provide a place to post outstanding examples of the Good Music.

Duke Ellington and His Orchestra

THE FAR EAST SUITE - SPECIAL MIX

Blue Bird     1966 / 1995

Notes: When Duke Ellington visited Baghdad, Isfahan and Beirut in 1963, they were part of a world we know more about today.  The fact that a military coup was in progress and jets shooting up the presidential palace when he arrived in Baghdad indicates that even then things were not perhaps what they seemed to be.  ---    Stanley Dance

MINOR MOVE

Blue Note 1958

One of the more tragic personal stories in Jazz. First recording as leader in 1958, last recording in 1961, dead at age 42. Died 13 years after his last recording. Recorded a lot more but Blue Note never released them. Seems the folks at Blue Note were disgusted by his heroin habit.

Notes: He died at 42, a bitter, penniless, incapacitated wreck, but he was given up for dead years before that."

No other genre can match Jazz for wasted talent and potential.
