@bkeske @noromance I noted your exchange about 12AU7 and 5814 dual triodes a few pages back. Just curious Brian, what brand 5814 did you use?

Hey Daniel, I purchased a couple old CBS-Hytron 5814A’s. I believe they are from the late 50’s with red lettering. I believe the earlier of these tubes had white lettering, then blue in the 60’s (which are said not to be as desirable).

@bkeske Hi Brian, I’ve not tried the CBS Hytrons. I have tried very late production (1987) Philips branded 5814As (made at the Sylvania plant) for the military (marked JAN). Pretty decent actually when compared with GEs from the early 60s and RCAs from the same era. I use them in an amplifier driving the 300B output power triode. Actually I’m using a mid-60s era RCA 12BH7A which yields a much larger soundscape (30% longer cathode/grid/plate) with nice vocals. If the filament supply has the capacity for the additional load of the 12BH7 (300ma vs. 150ma for 12AU7), it’s an interesting test. daniel |
