I have the same amp you do (last model, 8900, but essentially the same). I bought Sonus Faber Olympica Nova Vs to pair with it and they sound fantastic to me. Of course, demo, demo, demo, and listen to your ears. You’ll get lots of opinions. But your amp can support some amazing speakers so there’s likely something to be gained if your current speakers aren’t reaching your amp’s potential.
Have Mcintosh 8950 - Should I upgrade my Paradigm Prestige 75f?
Hi All. I have been using my Paradigm Prestige 75f speakers for about 5 or 6 years, paired to a NAD C56BEE amp. This was what I could afford at the time. I mostly listen to Jazz and electronic music, some other genres less so. The speakers always seemed to lack bass and be quite harsh and fatiguing in the mid to high range in my listening room which has wood floors, large windows, and plaster walls, measures 12 x 28 x 8 ft. Especially with rock music. Eventually my amp took a dump and I was lucky enough to get a Mcintosh 8950 recently. I don't want this to turn into a discussion about Mcintosh, as I know it can be a polarizing brand. But my speakers came to life with this amp. Bass like I have never heard from them, and so much more of a warm and pleasant listening experience overall. Still not great range or imaging. So now my question is am I missing out by not paring this amp with a higher end speaker? Are these speakers under paired for the amp? I am interested in something warm and laid back due to my room. Was thinking Sonus Faber Olympica Nova III floor speakers, which I have auditioned locally. I know it won't sound the same in my space. Wilson's sound good, but I cannot get past the aesthetic. Appreciate any input. Particularly the paring of Mcintosh to Prestige speakers, and if the Olympicas may be too big for my room size. Thanks.
