Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Paul, glad that you have enjoyed the show. Still,it seems like very few people went to see it? Is it always like that or just recently?

I had no idea that you needed a prood of vaccination to enter some place? We had nothing of a sort here.I know that you cant enter the US without it (as strange as it may sound, today, still?) In general, I am in constant dilemma, to quietly mind my own business, or to scream out loud when I see such things. In any case, my perception of the world and people has changed in the last two years because I saw some things that previously only read about it...and wonder...

at sfjazz center, where i recently attended a couple of shows, they no longer check for vax status, nor are masks required

that said. masks are offered at every entrance for those that want them to wear during the performance

performers on stage do not mask (they never did, even earlier in the pandemic when audience vax status was being checked)... the venue is very large, recently built, has an excellent hvac system with presumably modern levels of air filtration

I’m glad you had a good time and I’m glad things are getting back to normal. Last weekend, we went and saw a three piece band. They were okay, but never gonna go platinum 😉

@alexatpos I think the seating capacity at Birdland, counting barstools and tables, is about 150 but I could be wrong. It was crowded that night so maybe more then 75 (I did not walk around counting lol)
