crackling sound

What makes some vintage receivers give a brief 1-2 second crackling sound when powered off.  All other features when powered on sound great in stereo, both channels sound balanced and strong etc.  Just the annoying buzzing crackling sound when powered off.  Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
