@carlsbad2 , agreed somewhat, because keep in mind there are side mounted woofer designs. Bass waves aren’t directional. But yes I don’t necessarily want to give up large drivers.

Honestly, I think Legacy in general has the best bang for your buck for speakers. And these are incredible in my room...but like always, well, what's next? And I would also like the footprint to be a bit smaller.
Mostly I am afraid of losing the end to end coherence, as these speakers go from very deep to very high without really standing out. But I am also partial to silk dome tweeters, a bit warmer sound and good aesthetics.
What would be some of the options, where I guess, I will lose out on the bottom end, but gain midrange and high end?
Room size about 16 ft by 17 ft. Metrum Onyx dac to Luxman L509X integrated. I also use a Lyric Audio Ti 140 MK2 when in the mood for tubes. Musically everything from jazz (Blue Note, Impluse, Riverside) from the 50s/60s, to classic rock, indie rock, electronic, eclectic world music....I like and listen to every thing. So that's the main thing, the speaker can't be genre constrained. I love that about Legacy. I like Devore Fidelity a lot for example, very spritely speakers, but typically their speakers lack the body. Haven't heard the wide baffled speakers though.

A pair of 5A or 5A carbon get you a titanium honeycomb push / pull 12” … and a relatively small minimum baffle design…. and the built in sub amp to drive it. It’s bespoke Vandy design manufactured by Scanspeak…. typically flat in room to 18 or so….. The Jim Smith book is excellent BTW, i buy them used and hand them out like candy during my travels…. |
Ok, for a little more you need to look into the Wolf Von Langa Son speakers. Two way with field coil driven woofers. Goes down to 20-25 hertz and has that voice of one thing in spades. Special speaker. Contact Colin @gestalt as he is the importer and dealer. Great sized room for this speaker. I have a set that replaced my highly upgraded Fyne 704s. I needed a smaller speaker than my Fynes for my new room. Great speaker for our sized rooms. Highly efficient, modest size, killer base, spooky realism and imaging, and an AMT tweeter is so sweet sounding. All the best sound qualities of the best two way monitor with NO compromise in base response.
