@viridian thank you for the feedback and advice. I wanted to clarify that I mentioned the tube upgraded because that's an upgrade I didn't want to go to waste, not that I thought it had anything to do with the difference and performance. Anyhow, I'll take a look at that resistor and see what's going on. Thanks again for Illuminating the pathway there that it works on.
Antique Sound Lab worth getting repaired?
Hi all!
I have a wonderful ASL Phono Lux that I've enjoyed off and on over the years. About a year ago I had a bandmate who was also an electrical engineer replace the caps and give it a once over. However, since then the device will play MC cartridges just fine but muffles everything for MMs. So my bandmate (who has since moved to Japan) apparently did something with the capacitance. My local electronic repair store takes months and months to get to items and charges a bench fee in addition to repair cost.
I've upgraded the tubes with some really good NOS Phillips from Upscale Audio.
Again, the unit plays MC fine (like my Hana SL), but not any MM (like my Maestro V2). Is it worth dropping off at the repair shop so it can play both? I used to have a Hagerman Trumpet but sold it due to financial need; I now use a Schiit Mani.
Thanks for any advice.

@viridian Interesting; I found the original ad for my unit: "This ASL Phono Lux DT has the Altec 4722 matched units, and Riken ohm resistors. Also features a big Jensen 4 pole electrolytic cap. This mod is a $400 upgrade. The unit is stock otherwise. Great condition and sounds great. This unit was hot rodded by Chris Kipp of Audio Gallery of Sacramento. This is a superb sounding unit, warm, quick, and bigger soundstage than the stock unit. Technically, is this why the MM's are muffled? |
