Good results with tweeter re-doping
Bought some vintage (1985-88) KEF C40’s from FB Marketplace. About $125.
Lacking quite a bit of top end. Noted that tweeters (Tonegen soft dome) had doping that had mostly crumbled away.
A bit odd that KEF outsourced the tweeter for this line!
Researched issue online. Found that NOS eBay tweeters also show same issue.
Found some info on shellac re-doping.
A bit tricky to clean and then apply shellac in three layers (waiting 1/2 hr between applications)
And this worked very well. Pretty much night and day.
I prev. DIY’d two b110s and a t27 (with orig KEF xover kit stuffed pcb) into a vintage garage sale EPI cabinet with good acoustic suspension results. So I am familiar with the KEF “house” sound.
The c40s do carry that tradition.
