Audio gear is just another consumer item.
Initial buzz is done, inventories probably high.
Great time to buy. Wait a little longer for the floorstander being discounted.
Elac Adante was blown out at great prices- you just needed the room for them
Questioning Interest In MoFi Speakers
Included on my list for potential new speakers are the Andrew Jones designed Source Point 888. However I just looked at the MoFi site and see both the SP 8 and SP 10 are being offered at discounts. Both models generated quite a bit of interest when introduced not that long ago. So why discount relatively new speakers?
Was there limited interest and now sales dried up?
Have owners reported dissatisfaction which killed new sales?
Is there simply too much competition at the original prices?
Discounting any nearly new speaker gives cause to wonder about other models from that company So now I'm wondering if further interest in the 888 makes sense? Particularly if owners quickly become dissatisfied.
Whichever speaker I decide on will need to be purchased with a return option since none are offered at my singular local dealer.
Thanks @viridian, best comment I’ve read in a while Their process was, albeit unintentionally, their greatest contribution to this hobby. I can still taste the schadenfreude. |
19% discount on a 2 years on the market speaker doesn’t seem all that severe...many of his Elac speakers were offered at discount after a few years and are still selling briskly...I imagine same will happen on 888 in a few years...doesn’t mean owners are dissatisfied , maybe just some pre holiday marketing...my friends who own the source point speakers quite love them... |
there are many reasons for speakers to be discounted but in the end it is usually because of market value as a function of sound quality. the are priced at what the market will bear based on their sound quality experience. you see this with used speakers too. in the case of the SP 888 they are relatively new and have not yet established a need to be discounted. my personal experiences hearing the SP 8, 10 and 888 is that they are missing that last but important bit of smoothness and refinement in the midrange and treble for my preferences. i caution this by saying it could be related to amplifier and system synergy but it was there nonetheless. what value is a discounted speaker if it doesnt meet your sound quality objectives? buying with the ability to return is a smart move. for my money there are at least two other comparably priced speakers that I would try first. good luck.
